My boat motor went belly up on me last weekend. It would run fine at high RPM's, but would not stay idled. I brought it into the shop and the guy called me a couple of days later and told me it was fried. When I got there he took out a camera and stuck down the plug hole and the piston was cracked and in spots broke off. The wall was pretty scraped as well. It amazed me I was able to 5000 rpm's out of it 2 days prior.
This guy told me that 1999 to 2001 60 degree's we prone to doing this and that I would be better off buying a new or used motor. He does not sell new motors, but is currently looking for a used one for me. He said that it would cost me anywhere from 2500 to 3000 to rebuild it, but really did not want to do it, because the motor is prone to doing it.
Have any of you heard of this problem for this yr engines or is this guy just a Merc fan or something?

What would cause this to happen?
Should I rebuild or buy a different motor?
Any input would be great!
