I have a 1962 Evinrude Starflight IV 75 HP, model number 50529b. I just got this motor for my boat, it did not come with any controls, so i thought i could make my own. The wiring harness on it, and without any of the wires connected to anything (the plug is just sitting on the floor of the boat), the motor try's to turn over by just connecting the battery. nothing is hooked up, and you connect the battery and the motor turns over.

does anyone know why this is? can i get a wiring diagram for this motor? thanks for the help.

Either the battery cable is directly wired to the starter, the solenoid is stuck, or the start wire to the solenoid is shorted to power in the harness.

the positive lead to the battery is connected straight to the starter, is it supposed to be?

No.
It's supposed to be hooked to one of the big posts on the solenoid
