we wrote the other day about this problem but there has been no change.....we get nothing when we turn the key but when we place the key in the run postion and pull the cord it starts right up....we cn turn it off with the key so there must be some life left in that ignition switch......one thing we forgot to mention was that there is a green wire that is not connected to anything in the motor running along the lfet side as you look at the motor from the rear......it has a male connector at the end but we cannot find where it may have plugged in.....we take the wire and make a sweep of the area that it would reach but see no female connector or place to put the wire in the motor........oh the ground is connected from the batery to the motor also..........

Re: '02 merc 25 hp won't start

I think I would get a service manual and find the correct wiring diagram and see if all of the wires are connected properly. Green may be needed or maybe not, might go to an accessary?

First I would clean battery connections, always suspect.

I would try a process of elimination. Disconnect the starter motor from the solenoid (put a backup wrench on the connections so as to not twist the solenoid connections) and put 12v to the starter wires and see if it works.

If so, reconnect starter to solenoid and check solenoid by disconnecting the small solenoid wires and putting 12v to the solenoid small wire connectors, should click and and put 12v to the starter.

If all this works, disconnect the + wire from the control box to the solenoid and see if you get 12v there with a voltmeter when you turn the key to start position, if not, there is a wiring issue somewhere.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

It would have been much smarter to add this info to your original post, ladydi.

Did you actually remove, clean and reinstall all of the battery cable connections?

well we took the boat out today....used the rope to start it at the dock.....drove it about 1 mile and stopped to fish......about an hour later for the heck of it we turned the key and it started.....it started one more time after that then needed the rope again....between moves......ran it again for about a mile and a half and anchored.....about 2 hours later used the key and it started again.......i think it might be the battery.......although the meter says its charged to 12.4v

You didn't do it, did you?

Why ask for advice if you won't answer questions and won't do what is suggested?

terminals were taken off sanded clean and replaced.......yes we did it....matter of fact they get coated with a liquid copper solution to promote conductivity....we use that stuff on all batteries (car, truck, tractor)
