synchronize points ? Johnson FD-11

hello , i was reading in an old mercury repair manual when setting the points it calls for the points to open /close exactly 180 degres apart even has special tool. how important is this setting on my old Johnson FD-11 18 hp. thanks, i know i get the right answer here

If you're looking for that last 100 RPM, then getting a timing tool and synching the points may get you there, but in general practice simply setting the points at .030" with the fiber rider of the point rocker aligned with the crankshaft keyway is plenty good enough. The problem with trying to synch the points is that there is usually so much slop in the linkages, base plate, etc. that by the time you go through the trouble of aligning everything, something shifts and you're off by .002" again. The motors run fine regardless...
