Hi Everyone,
Just bought the above boat with this motor.

It has been sitting a few years, started her up, first couple times you could hear it coming back to life; eventually ran (i was using the water ear muffs on my driveway). Anyways, i plan to replace spark plugs and bottom end gear oil.

My questions:

Does anyone know which gear oil to put in this thing?

Where should the warm water (from cooling) be coming out of this engine so I can check if the water pump and impeller works okay?

Does anyone know how to remove the cables from the throttle gear box, they appear almost too complicated to disconnect to move it around.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

You'll need regular gear oil for it, like HiVis or the XPFR oil -if you can't find HiVis. The telltales did not come out until the 1978 model year, so you really do not have an ability to verify the pump operation. However, you can hold your hand by the two exhaust relief ports at the upper part of the midsection. When the thermostat opens (after perhaps 30-45 seconds after first starting) water droplets will form on your hand, indicating the thermostat has opened and is functioning. Unless you have a problem with one of the control cables, you may want to leave the box sealed. You can disconnect the cables from the engine and move the box with the cables attached, then reattach at the engine.

Hey Thanks for answering :)

Just a follow up questions about the gear oil, for HiVis or the other, is there a certain weight I am looking for, or do retailers just sell "HiVis" marine gear oil and thats it?

Thanks
J
