:Hey guys i have a 79 Maquis with a 140 mercruiser in it. Its all original as far as i know.I Just dewinterized it and got out on the water. We were bombin around all day pullin my tube, then the last stop i let off the throttle came to a stop to pick up my tuber then the boat would just rev up and wouldnt go into gear? no forword or reverse,so i had it pulled back to inspect it and found a nice size chip and dent out of my prop? And when you spin the prop (boat in nuatral) it used to make a little clicking sound now its just a free spin no sound what so ever ?? Any body got any ideas? I spoke to one Mechanic and he told me if you hit bottom with the prop hard enuff theres a saftey pin or some sort of devise that lets go to prevent any further damage to the gears, could this be my issue here??

Spun prop hub...
New prop or take that one in to a shop for a new hub...and repair..
If its aluminum have it fixed and save for a spare..
Get a new prop for the boat...;)

There is no shear pin in your outdrive. Must have been a pretty poor mechanic if he even suggested that you had one.

Rubber hubs, on props, have pretty much replaced them and they usually do not break loose so much as to spin freely at low (idle) speed. If that was the case, you could check to be sure, remove the prop, use chalk to across the back of the prop body and inner hub, put the drive in forward gear, place the prop partially on the shaft backward and try to turn the prop.

If it is the hub, you will see the chalk marks go out of alignment as the prop spins around the inner hub.

Its not the prop hub ? The out drive go's into gear and the prop turns properly but in between the back of the motor and the transom i can see the shaft turning but the engines not. Is there some kind of engine coupler to the out drive or somthing like that i could have spun or broke?

Yep, and it sure sounds like that's the problem.

That would be the coupler, pull the drive, pull the engine, R/R/ the coupler AND the rear motor mounts, reinstall motor and check engine alignment, install drive
Engine coupler mis-alignment is the leading cause of coupler failure, rear engine mounts are the prime suspect

Do i have to pull the motor and out drive or can just the motor be pulled to get at the coupler. So i should be sure the motor mounts are not shot as well then or just change em any way?. Thanks bt doctur. its nice getting another opinion on it.
