Got a 92 model 88 hp Johnson that does not shoot water out of the pee hole consistently when in idle. Give it a little gas and get going = get a good stream. Am I looking at water pump problems?

99% yes, time to replace impeller.

When was it changed last? If it has never been changed, it is long overdue.

Re: 88 hp water problems

Just for reference, I have a 1988 88hp and get a solid stream even at idle. The previous owner had the boat 13 years and never changed the water pump impeller. I know it needs to be done, but I'm afraid the shaft will be stuck in the motor so I keep putting it off.

I have the exact same problem with a 50hp. Can I just replace the impeller or do I need to also order all of the gaskets/seals in the water pump?

Re: 88 hp water problems

Haven't had the boat for too long. Bought it from an older gentleman that hasn't used it in awhile. Said he replaced the water pump about 3 years ago. Also noticed that when putting the motor in idle - the engine would rev up. Putting it back into gear was a hassle. This did not happen every time I put it in idle, but it did happen a few times. Any thoughts?
