Ran without oil

I was running up river yesterday, and the boat stopped. I cranked it over and it started, ran about 1 minute and died again. My gas gauge is bad, I guessed no fuel. After towing back to camp, add gas, no start. I pulled the cowling, no oil in the oil tank. Where should I go next? 1996 75 horse Mercury outboard, three cylinder.

Have another beer, then cuss out that no-good motor that let you down.

When you run a motor out of oil, they wear out real quick.

hope it helps

im afraid jmartin is probably right - and i'm guessing that you didnt get a warning beep from your controls since you ran till it quit - as last ditch effort you could check the low oil sensor and cross your fingers - but like he said it doesn't take long at all to kill it without oil .

Re: Ran without oil

Did it spin but doesn't start (maybe reusable) or did it simply doesn't spin (complete overhaul needed)?

Re: Ran without oil

if you ran out of oil do compression test on each cylinder should be at least 120 on all if not reply with results

Re: Ran without oil

I did a partial compression test today, top cylinder 110, bottom cylinder 75. Middle cylinder, spark plug broke just below where the socket grabs the plug. While I was testing the other two cylinders, the ceramic and electrode blew out forcefully, so there is some compression. I am soaking with penetrating oil before I try an easy-out. Where should I go next? Is it possible I just burned up the rings? Can I tear down just the top end to inspect the cylinder walls? Thanks for any help.

Re: Ran without oil

My oil line (on my 90 hp, 3 cyl.) from the tank to the pump cracked on me once while running the engine about 4000 RPM's. Noticed a change in the engine sound as the engine was starting to loose power and immediately shut it down. Ended up draining the rest of the leaking oil from the tank, added it to the gas and all was well. Not sure if the the engine was completely oil starved or not, but engine still runs fine today. Compression is still about 120 in all three holes. This happened about 4 years ago and I have put about another 250 hrs on engine since then. It now has 1000 hrs on it and still going strong. If you can crank your engine, I think you will be all right.

I did the compression check with no plugs installed, middle cylinder has shell of plug in it.

arrgh -dont you hate it when that happens - well on the plus side now you will be pulling her apart and doing a rebuild some of the compression looked good so it might not be too major - personally i hate oil injection my engine came with the autoblend unit when i bought it new - i threw it out when i got home .

There's no "head" that can be removed or exhaust ports you can look at on theses engines. You really have to strip the powerhead and remove it to look at the cylinders...sorry!
