Re: 68 Starcraft Starchief 18' Cuddy Restoration

I got more of the priming on today, and have started block sanding with 400 grit. My questions to all of you: Do you sand the entire boat between coats, or just sags/runs ect? How aggressivly do you sand, and how thick do you apply the paint in the roll and roll method?

Re: 68 Starcraft Starchief 18' Cuddy Restoration

When I did sand a little, like tonight since the rain hit my still wet stern & sides Monday night..I just scuffed it up enough to take a bit of the "shine off" if that makes sense..

And for larger areas, I loaded up the roller pretty heavy, concentrating on a stern to bow line, or as far forward as I could go before reloading the roller..
Then I would start a few feet back from where the paint started to thin from the roller and go again, and again..

When I put the 2nd coat on..I went lighter with the roller..I found that for the second coat, the surface was much smoother than the first (guess it was that nice new layer of paint) so if I went heavy..It would bubble up or orange peel easily..To fix that, I just went over those areas with almost NO paint on the roller and no pressure against the hull..just lovingly carressed the bubbles with the roller...

Yep pretty much same as Kev only time I sanded was between primer and paint . I did of course have to sand the sides after the Tape fiasco :D. I start at the stern and work forward in sections top to bottom of the sides about 2-3' at a time reloading the roller as needed trying to keep a wet line so I am not applying wet paint against dry paint if that makes sense basically you want to keep a wet edge until you get to the bow . Then I start on the other side and work back from the bow same thing about 2-3' down the side working down from the top edge . I usually have to refill the roller 3 times for each 2-3' section.

Cool, Thanks guys! I am going to try and get some paint on her this weekend if the weather holds and it doesn't get too hot. Unfortunately I am out in the sun.

I missed a deal on one of these boats, and this thread makes me sad that I missed it.Good work on the boats.

Oh,my opinion on the transom covers behind the rear seats, expanded aluminum mesh.Allows air flow and gives some texture to the transom.

Yep me too Bud..
Last Sunday it was 98 degrees..out painting the bow..Couldn't lean against the tin and the bow was sooo hot it was cooking the paint as soon as it hit..
I will probably be sanding her down and hitting it again..It didnt turn out so great, see for yourself..

I seen that before but didn't know I was close to being right. It looked cool also. The area was framed with 1"x2" stock and the expanded aluminum mesh was laid over it and held down with phillps counter sunk type SS screws. It looked semi factory. The seats in the boat filled the space and gave it the appearence of them being made into the hull and dog house. The bottoms flipped forward to accsess storage under the seats.Reminded me of the pontoon seats I used to redo.

Well I had a little setback today. Roll and roll didn't go so well:( I now have 1/2 a boat in orangepeel and rollerlines navy blue. I tried the paint full strength and thinned 20% with spirits, and they both look like s@*#. Looks like I am back in the sanding game. I think I might have it done by the pros, heaven only knows what that' gonna cost.

Bret you cn do it you just need to clow down that and it might have been a bit warm today to roll and tip . I realise thats alot of boat to paint but I know ooops went out in the weeeeeee hours of the morning to repaint his due to the heat and his is looking great so that may be your option . The other quick option would be to go get yourself a Wagner power painter and enough extension cord to reach out there where you are painting and just shoot it . I didnt notice anything close to the boat so that may be a better option .

Re: 68 Starcraft Starchief 18' Cuddy Restoration

Ok, after reading and watching the vids and mult threads on roll and tip, I think I figured out what went wrong.

#1 It was sunny, #2 It was hot (86 F), #3 It was humid, #4 It was windy (All 4 make the paint flash faster and didn't give me time to tip or time for it to self level.), #5 I put it on too thick, #6 rustoleum marine is thicker than regular rustoleum and needs thinned a little, #7 I was rushing so I could get the motor re-mounted. So I went back to the random orbital sander this am and am undoing yesterday's fiasco. I guess I need a little more patience..... and a climate controlled, concrete floored pole building with a gantry crane, 3 phase, 15 hp compressor, and air filtration system:eek::D

Bret,

Its looking great thus far. You've put a lot of work into her. Have you heard anything on the windshield yet. We had discussed the possiblity of a better price on two. I discovered that my "modified" version is not attached to the frame at all and it leaves a lot of flex.

Hi Bret, I have been reading your thread. Your boat is coming along great. You did your deck just what I want to do to mine when I get that far into it. That durabak looks real fine. David
