i have a 92 90 hp evinrude just got it back on the boat. motor had been sittin for atleast 2 years. motor wouldnt start at first cleane out carbs and got it to run the it was overheating so i replaced the water pump then it was running fine. put it in the water and it ran fine just hesitated going in and out of gear. was out fishing the other day and we were running back in when motor starting making a hoorible noise and then it cut out. when tryin to restart it sounded like metal on metal coming from inside the motor dnt know waht to do if it is fixable or should i repower with a new e-tec

Well you first need to know what is wrong with it. You may have blown a ring or rod but you need to diagnose the problem before making any decision.

Pull the heads and have a look inside. If everything looks normal, check the lower unit.

well before you started taking parts off you can get an idea by taking all the plugs out and shining a light in and looking in the cylinders.

while you are at it try turning the flywheel over by hand..see if the nmotor is jammed up....

make sure it is not in gear!!!

if it isnt in gear try turning the prop by hand, see if that turns freely.

if the motor turns over by hand with the fly wheel and the prop doesnt turn while in neutral. then crank it over with the starter and listen.

we dont know by metal to metal if you think the soun dis coming from INSIDE the power head..maybe it is the starter grinding away all we know.

check what the plugs look like.

if you cannot turn the motor over by hand with the plugs out and in neutral....( check the prop to see if it turns freely to verify it is in neutral) then you probably have serious internal motor problems and then the heads have to come off for a look.

good luck

Metal noises are never good things from any engine. If a new Eterc is a financial possibility, have the Evin dealer take a look without mentioning the re power, then decide what top do. If you go new, haggle the diagnosis money off the new etec..

actually this might be the OPs chance to score that brand new motor

" honey it isnt safe to go out with the old motor....we need a new motor"

that is how I got my 1997 90 hp evinrude!!

a little ticking was coming from under the flywheel...wife says "that doesnt sound right? I dont think it is safe to go out on Long Island Sound with a suspect motor, you need to get a new motor before me and the kids go out with you again"

guy went out and got a brand new E-tech 115!!!!!!!!

sold me his motor for $700

it ticked all summer... 15 all day trips!!!!! and it was ticking when he bought it...

but wife says go get a new one!! ha ha ha
got to make her happy ...right?

motor turns over by hand and with the starter. noises is definitely coming from inside the motor when i pull the heads what should i be lookin for? i could maybe manage the money for a new motor but would love to get 1 or 2 more seasons out of this one

Look for mangled stuff, scored cylinder walls, lumps of metal stuck to the top of the pistons and the like to begin with.

Re: 90 hp v4 problems

well pulling the head will tell you if the cylinder walls are scoured..

you cant see the sides of the pistons to check the rings

you can see if something let go and is rattling around above the piston..

you will probably break 3 or 4 head bolts....that will not be fun trying to correct that problem.

the truth is the motor is not wrking and sounds very bad...

what little thing could it possibly be that could lead to a simple fix???

the only saving grace might be that you found it needs a rebuild and that you didnt pay a mechanic to tell you..

other wise it realistically will be two months before you can repair it if you try to tackle it yourself.

1992..if it hasnt had any major work done i the last 10 years, you wll be breaking a lot of bolts undoing this motor..

I just took a 70 completely apart....the bolts that hold the head to the lower mid section are brutal to get out sometimes.

as well as head bolts.

I am not trying to talk you out of anything...

but the reality is you got serious problems more than likely.

good luck
