I have a 1985 Bayliner with a 125 Force motor. Engine has been frequently surging and I have been noticing fuel filter constantly getting filled up with orange like substance. After removing fuel float aparatus that goes to fuel gauge, I can see quite a bit of this in the tank itself. The tank is stainless steel and cannot be removed. It seems the manufacturer placed the fuel tank in while making the boat. Can an anyone suggest how to cleen out all this crud in the tank. The largest hole I can access the tank is aprox 2" in circumfrance. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank You.

Re: Cleaning Out Gas Tank Suggestions?

Someone recently used a vacume cleaner to siphon gas from a tank.DON"T do that. Not that your that stupid. What I do is run a siphon hose from the tank out the drain hole at the back of the boat.Siphon out as much as you can.Get one of those electric fuel pumps and it will suck the rest out or a small pump that hooks to a drill.Electrical devices create sparks, sparks will start a fire.
Boat Stove Alcohol. Can be bought at most marine stores. It will absorb it's weight in water.Dri-Gas will help a little(very little),rubbing alcohol has water in it.Make sure you have out as much as possible.
The water got in there somehow,I had a hose go bad and when the bildge filled up it worked it's way into the tank.New gasoline has ethanol, it will destroy any old lines.Replace them at this time. J

Thanks for the sugestion. I don't think it is water in the gas though. It is like a gritty, orange substance.

Rusty water.Corrosion. Your sending unit will stop working eventually too!
Unless the boat set for more than 6-7 years it's water.Gas won't go bad that quick.Drain it out and seperate it and discard the gas.J
