Discharge Pump

I was trying to summerize my boat (boat is out of water), filled the waste tank with water from the sink (tank is full), turned the key to empty the tank and nothing was coming out. I just heard some gurgling noise (air?) at the discharge outlet and some water was coming out from my vent line. I checked the seacock and a hose distal to the pump, and they are patent. Than I disconnected the hose between the waste tank to the pump, filled it with water, turned the key on, and water was shooting out from the disconnected hose. Looks to me like the pump is pumping water backwards. Any help appreciated.

Re: Discharge Pump

check if is clogged with toilet paper. Mine was hard to pump out because it was clogged with multiply TP that would not dissolve. Only use single ply or holding tank approved tissue. Or even better put it in a trash can or bag.

Re: Discharge Pump

Toilet paper was never used, if you know what i mean. The boat was winterized in october 08, waste tank was flushed several times with antifreeze. BTW I have 240 DA 07.

on the discharge line where it splits between the overboard discharge and the pump out fitting.

Re: Discharge Pump

I don't have a Y valve. Overboard discharge is separate from pump out fitting.

Re: Discharge Pump

what year is your boat because all vessels operating within 7 miles of the us coast or inland waterways are required to have one or face heavy fines.

It's a Searay 240 DA 07. I do have a valve (seacock), which is open and patent, but I do not have additional Y valve. I winterize my boat and I closed only the seacock.

Re: Discharge Pump

Did you take the battery out for winterizing? Is it hooked up correctly? Reversed battery connections can make for a bad day.

Re: Discharge Pump

Yes, I did take the batteries out for the winter, when I place them back ( black to minus, red to the plus), I noticed that I switched their position battery No 1 (rear) is now No 2 (front). I was thinking about it, but since the batteries produce DC (direct current) current always flows in the same direction, unlike AC. Do you think, that I should change them to the original setup?, it was PITA to put them back.

Re: Discharge Pump

first every holding system I have ever seen has 3 places where hoses connect to the tank an inlet from the head, a vent, and a discharge.
the discharge hose comes out of the tank into a y-valve two hoses come out of the y- valve 1 goes to the macerator pump the other goes to the pumpout deck fitting. the only seacock is if it is a manual head and should be for the water for flushing, if it is a vacuflush (sometimes called an electric head) it should have no seacock as the water for flushing should come from your fresh water system.

now that I ranted about that I will ask what should have been my first question. is this a waste tank or a grey water tank we are talking about? and my next step would probably be to remove the pump and inspect it for restrictions or freeze damage which can happen if a small amount of water is left over in there.

Re: Discharge Pump

I do have a gray water system = one tank ( waste tank).
The head (vacuflash), shower and sinks ( head, galley and a cockpit) going in to the tank. Two separate hoses come out of the tank, one hose goes to pump out deck fitting, the other to the macerator, to the seacock, to the discharge outlet. The third one is a vent hose with filter.

We are talking about about one tank, which is a holding/graywater/waste tank.
