1980 35 hp overheating

Hello I have a 1980 35 hp that overheated, stopped spitting water. We pulled the water pump assembly apart and the impeller was still in one piece, i expected no fins to be there at all. It wasn't in very good shape but still together. Is there any other reason this would have overheated? thermostat? thanks in advance

Replace the impeller, mine quit and when I removed it it looked fine, but when replaced with new it works. It don't take much but they are cheap and the first thing I would replace when trying to work through a problem like this.
