Spray-on liner or carpet?

Before I bought my boat the previous owner pulled out the carpeting. They said it was getting rough. My question is could I use a spray-on liner , like the stuff for truck beds. I guess once it is on,, it's on. The boat is a 16 foot fiberglass tri-hull. Carpet is cheap and removable. Should I just go with carpet?

carpet has no business being in a boat. it holds water, gets fish guts etc in it. nasty, and you walk barefoot in it. may as well swim in the toilet.

TD, I have noticed you have a real dislike for carpet. Your comment about the carpet made me laugh for a couple of minutes.

This morning I cleaned out squirrel guts from my boats carpet (my dog carried the critter in it). It was disgusting and made me wish there was no carpet in it. A rubber liner would have made it very easy to clean. I?m actually going to lay down some fiberglass on the floor and never install carpet again.

Only true if one does not periodically scrub the carpet. Bed liner is certainly an option but very hot on bare feet and slippery when wet. I prefer carpet in my boat and I gut/clean my fish on shore, not in the boat. That's what live wells are for.

I used Durabak on my deck... You can view results on my resto thread below. Non-skid surface, waterproof, easy to clean... I have snap-in carpet for those day's I have guests with ginger feet! :D

I took all the carpet out of my 95 Bass Tracker, replaced all the wood,it was wet under every inch of it.The carpet I mean, even here in Arizona with the sun blasting on it at 115 degrees.I rolled on gelcoat inside and out on all the wood, with a handfull of sand on the last coat.it's a fishing boat though, and never have barefooted people in it,lol. That might be a problem for the ladies.

Well it is a fishing boat. So there won't be very many bare feet. @bear69cuda- Durabak seems like a good idea for me, btw nice hazmat suit. Question- Is Durabak non-slip? If not maybe some of that no-slip stripping that was in my Grandmother's shower and tub floors.

my .02 is bedliner material is generally pretty weighty stuff. I unlike TD do not have fish guts in the boat. By the way TD, what ever became of the tasha's case of petty theft? :D :D :D :D :D

Hydroturf is another option. I have the spray liner in my boat and am thinking of going with Hydroturf. Can be found at hydroturf.com. It accepts paint well. A lot of duck hunters use it.

Re: Spray-on liner or carpet?

I posted this in another thread or two, but over the last year I've been playing with a couple of different options in the same boat and getting opionoins from my "crew". The general concensus is that plain old rustoleum with walnut hull blasting media for non-skid is the winner...

Re: Spray-on liner or carpet?

With the bedliner-type materials - read the fine print about temperature . I was going to do that to the deck on my fishing/tubing/all-around boat and put a snap in mat. BUT I found a few notes that the material can soften under high temps. That halted my curiosity. I do like the look of it though.

Ended up going with the carpet from Lowes and am happy with it - going to put a little scotchguard on it and I have runner mats for the back deck for fish guts to keep it within the acceptible range.

It's not my living room -- so I guess I have to adjust the scuzz-o-meter a bit if I want to have fun.

Carpet looks nice and feels nice, but it is not as convenient to clean and does hold water, which sucks especially in cold weather.

Re: Spray-on liner or carpet?

We have snap in marine grade carpet the we did not have the dealer install the other half of the snaps into the deck. We get the best of both worlds by having carpet when cruising and a deck free of screwed in snap retainers ripping up wet feet when if you slip on the fiberglass deck.

Yeah, we looked high and low for on lot boats that didn't have carpet. We learned before purchase that a boat with snap in carpet is very bad...the snaps HURT alot, without the carpet in place. I hit one with the heal of my foot when looking at a boat in the showroom. I can't believe that they still sell boats with carpet...

Luke, my buddy has the hydroturf in his boat and it's used on rivers for fishing/duck hunting so it gets dirty. He just pressure washes it and it looks new again.

I throw the fish back in the water.
That's what Captain Highliner is for.

:D

...sorry, couldn't resist.
