Re: painting job

Use the search button on "painting my boat" or what paint do I use to paint my boat". This will produce more than you probably care to read! Check out "pics of progress so far" thread, probably the nicest "cheap" paint job going right now on here. HTH.

Perfection paint would probably be cheaper and by far more durable..The stuff is really amazing if your fimilar with car paint imagine popping a dock at 4 mph grinding to a halt and there's is not even a dull in the finish..excluding your freindly nail of course..;)

Hello armen..

could you please tell us what year/model boat you have.. pics would be cool too :)

Its not just the paint but the prep and primer.

Automotive... ? you mean Imron ?PPG ? would help if you state what paint your talking about.. ( you may have a line for good pricing on paint .. ).

Lemme put it another way..if your gonna spend say 500 bucks for the paint..and a good Imron or awlgrip will be 600 .. then Id go with the 600.. ( but Im a professional ..and thats all I use ).

Re: painting job

Please...dont call me sir :)

Is there a reason you want to "paint" ?

do you need to ?

Wellcraft had good thick gel..

really.. in all cases..you dont want to paint unless you have a large yacht..

I would try wetsanding starting with as coarse as 400 until you get the corse oxidation out of the gelcoat, then work back up to 1200 or 1500 before buffing out with a high speed buffer and a product called aquabuff 2000 (search and buy online). Finish up with 3m finesse it ii and you'll be golden...

if you have to paint, then I think you'll be fine with good 2-part polyurethane auto paint IF you do a bang up job on prep and are trailering it (not staying in the water). If you're going to go with a solid color, I wouldn't do base coat clear coat, but single stage...

but I bet you can get it to sand / buff out to look great...

Re: painting job

The answers have left me scratching my head. I see many threads discussing minor repairs for filling in and touching up a dinged up keel. There are also threads discussing roll and tip techniques. Now I'm seeing that the paint alone for an 18' hull is around $600 and that paint should never be used on a boat unless it's a large yacht.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not trying to be argumentative. It's just that the comments seem to contradict what others have said about repainting over repaired dings and scratches.

Again - I'm not trying to be disrespectful or hijack the thread, but the advice seems to be contradictory and I'm loking at the same thing myself - just on a smaller scale.

Thats why I love my tin can! 2 quarts of trusty rusty-oleum did wonders!:D
(after proper light scuff sanding and cleaning off the dust of course)

Just rolled it on with a closed cell foam roller..after all it's really just alum siding..lol

Re: painting job

Hello again..

On the question of paint is for larger boats.. thats just my opinion as far as " maintenance " goes.

Gunner.. you have me there m8..

Ive never used perfection .. However.. US paints Awlgrip ( linear polyurethane ) IS the best . out on the west coast you have Sterling .. which is basically the same stuff.

Dupont Imron and US paint Awlgrip has been around for years as well..and has been tried and true..

Interlux perfection 2 part polyurethane is probably the same basic paint as the Imron or Awlcraft 2000. They all have better repairability ( not like Awlgrip LP which is a real PITA to repair/blend ).

If I get a job and the price is right I will try perfection ( spray of cource ).

The boat I am working on was painted by the P O with automotive paint. I thought it was a exellent paint job, very glossy just like a car that just got waxed but upon closer inspection, it was runnining all over & looked very bad with all the runs in it when you looked at it up close. I'm in the process now of taking it off, I would have had to paint it again anyway due to all the repairs I have to do to it.
