I've been chasing this little problem of having to have my idle stop screwed way out in order to achieve idle with throttle plates closed as they should be.
I've been through the carb too many times to count.
Today I removed the leaf plates and found the gasket deteriorated pretty bad and the little screens inside the leaf plates by the oil drains? were plugged solid with gasket material, I had another leaf block assembly ready to go from my parts bin, I cleaned the surfaces up good and slapped it on there so hopefully I have good news to report in the near future.
By the way the reeds all looked ok, what would the plugged up screens have effected?

SUCCESS! finally nailed it.
I went through everything from carb, ignition, syncronize, ect.
After pulling the leaf plate assy, and finding gasket material plugging the screens and swelled up fuzzy sick looking gasket.
Replaced the whole plate assy with gasket and I could tell immediatly something was different, I think the intake gasket was leaking causing the whole rough running condition, the plugged screens I think was just a side issue that still don't know for sure what they do but after closer investigation it looks like they screen oil leading to the crank bearings, very important find.
Now my engine acts totally different, the idle stop adjustment (timing) is back to normal mid way in the screw threads and i can even idle it way down to just a slow beat, on muffs.

So did you replace all four leaf assemblies, Or just the intake manifold gasket? It sounds like you are equating your rough idle problem solely to a leaking intake gasket and not necessarily had anything to do with the leafs. Why did you come to this conclusion?
