Hi,

I have a 1990 5hp evinrude (model BE5DRLESR) which runs a bit smokey. Unfortunately it didn't come with a users manual so I am not sure what the fuel/oil ratio should be. I ran it with a 50:1 mix but it was a bit smokey. Does anyone know what the fuel/oil ratio should be for this model.

cheers

cheers mate.

I must admit it was 'cheap' 2 stroke oil from an automotive store, although it did say it was suitable for outboards. I think I will try some good quality marine oil then fit new plugs before I start stripping down the carb.

If you can find it in a synthetic or synthetic blend, it might reduce the smoke a little. TCW-3 is critical, however.

probably not the oil. 50to1 is not much at all.

Don't knock what you call "cheap" TC-W3 outboard oil. It meets all of your outboard's requirements.

When you spend the big bux to get the fancy name you are only buying their advertizing and marketing cost. The stuff you buy at Wal Mart, SuperTech, is made by the same people that make most of the expensive, fancy branded oils, and it will perform just as well.

It is true that synthetics smoke less and offer less risk of plug fouling. . . at something like 2 or 3 times the cost.

It is your decision, but don't get the idea that spending more automatically gets you a "better" product.

That's right they switched over to 100:1 in 1985, I think, but after a short period changed back to 50:1
All since 1964 should be run on 50:1 including those produced in 1985 and the following couple of years. Handbooks should have been amended and 100:1 decals removed.

I have heard that the biggest problem was engines rusting up due to lack of oil when laid up out of season. Don't know if that's right or not.

Any TCW-3 rated oil is good. I have been running Wal-mart brand for a good while now. Is it more smokey ??? a little at start up but other than that it's as good as the oil that is 3 times the price. No plug fouling experienced.

sorry i am not knocking walmart brand oil , i run there oil and filters in my vehicles . i have also ran there super tech 2-stroke oil in my boats. i am currently using pennsoil xlf synthetic blend for older ( seasoned ) engines, I pay $10 a gallon for it , I feel that is pretty good.
