Hi, I'm new to the forum.

Friday night I purchased an immaculant condition 1989 Evinrude 6hp 2 stroke, it looks like new & starts first pull (tested in garbage pail with water when purchased). Upon getting home I put the motor on the stand, Sunday I noticed dark (black) oil leaking from the exhaust port just above the propeller. at first I didn't think anything of it but I don't recall my 9.9 ever leaking like this... a little water maybe but not oil. The previous owner said he just changed the oil last week & tried it out last saturday... (he was selling because it was too small for his new boat)

Any ideas???

Perfectly normal. It's unburned 2-stroke oil that gos out of the exhaust.

From the exhaust port it is likely excess unburnt oil from idling or running on muffs. Motor will not burn away all the oil under those conditions.

Should clear after a run. If not the top seal in the gear case for the down shaft could be leaking.

I'll get it in the water & check it again after... The motor is very clean & probably only been in the water a couple of times so worst case, maybe that seal dried out!

Thanks for the help

Did you ever get out to the water? Just curious if you had futher problems!

I noticed last night after getting my 1974 20HP Merc running that is had this very dark oil leaking out between the propeller and lower unit where the two meet. I have just changed the foot oil and it has not even been in gear since the change. This oil didn't look like foot oil much too dark and a thick.

I noticed black oil leaking from the lower unit/prop for the first time in 20 years on this motor. Then I had some black from the upper exhaust ports, and noticed a lot of black oil out the prop when I was having trouble starting. Figured I might be running too rich a mixture especially after reassurance from our friends on this forum that it was unburned oil and not a problem. They also pointed out, correctly, that lower unit oil will either be brown (clean) or milky/gray (water intrusion), and there is no crankcase oil like in a car.

Then the motor died at high speed; restarted once and died again. Mechanic found water in the cylinders, probably from a failed exhaust port baffle. It's beyond repair (1988 70hp Johnson). Makes me wonder, though, if those were signs, and if it were a newer motor, I should have taken it in rather than run it.

Thoughts from the experts?

Must be the day to find the unburnt oil. I just noticed the same thing on my '75 115. Thought it was a leaking seal. I just ran it on muffs yesterday to clear it and run out the gas when I got home and then tilted the motor up. When I put it down today, I saw the oil running down from between the prop and lower unit. It wasn't much and it was definitely black, not brown. Thanks for clearing that up!
