mercontrol problem

Hello
I have a 1974 Mercury 200 and the mercontrol I am using is the one I got when I bought this motor. The problem is the shift is reversed, when the control arm is pushed forward the motor is shifted in reverse (the shift lever is pointing to R on the motor). I have look at the assemble drawing of the controller and it dose not look like it is assemble wrong or there is any way to reverse the shifting in the control. There is no difference in throttle control from forward to reverse (same travel distance). I also looked at the motor to see if the linkage can be changed. Do I have the wrong controller for this motor? I am not sure of the model but 57617A matches
the assembly drawing
Please help!

Thanks

Re: mercontrol problem

Have you had the lower unit off recently for waterpump maintenance? If so, the shift rods can get misaligned and give that effect.

have you had the throttle and shift cables off the motor or control recently? Youi need ot make sure that are not switched. As you move the throttle handle forward, the shift cable moves first, followed by the throttle cable.

Re: mercontrol problem

The motor shifts right without the cables attached. The control box is moving the shift cable in the wrong direction. I checked to make sure that I don't have the cables reversed by attaching the cable that moves first from N to F. I have read other posts that had the same problem but there was no solution to this problem. Could I have the wrong controller for this motor?
