I recently picked up a 24 foot bayliner with a rebuilt 351 windsor and what i think to be a stinger outdrive. I am a engine guy so I have got the motor running better than ever. The boat had set two years before i bought it and I had to put a marine carb on it and i up graded the distributor away from point. The tank was metal so I am replacing the tank with aluminum and am redoing the floor while im at it. I have no idea where to begin on the out drive the oil seems good, boot is shot. After that i dont know what breaks on these drives or what to look for.
P.S. bought a selock book

It's actually called a stRinger. That is actually a nickname and was never used by OMC. It refers to the fact that the entire system (not just the engine) mounts to the stringers, whereas other I/Os mount to the transom.

There are (were) some advantages to this design, but it never caught on. And since OMC is gone, your biggest problem is parts. What you have to watch for are tilt mototrs, tilt clutches, tilt solenoids, tilt anything. Select trim stuff (if you have it) can be expensive and problematic too.

The fact is you have it, so search here a lot. Take a deep breath and weave through the bashing to some good info. There are some experienced stringer guys here and in the past, so lots of info. Good luck!

Shift cables are a pain it seems, especially with Cobras

Thanks for your information ,Should I go through the seals or ball gears before i run it much. It seems to work but I am nerves about running it much with out knowing what may be going on in side. Can i mess it up beyond repair by running it?

Run it, see if you end up with any milkshake in the three gear boxes . . . If you have stuff clanking and banging and stuff "done blowed up", sure you could damage beyond repair, but that could be said for anything. How could I have forgotten about ball gears . . .

What year? I guess it could be a Cobra, totally different animal. Got a big rubber boot on the transom? If so, Stringer . . .

Another question is if it is an electric shift or mechanical?

These can be good drives...IF they have been taken care of. As said before, OMC is kaput and parts are expensive and hard to come by....finding someone to work on them is almost impossible. Get yourself a manual (a factory one if at all possible). If ball gears are worn more than 1/2 way, i recommend replacing them. There are actually three (3) separate gearcases on these (lower, upper, and intermediate) drain all oil and look for water. If any water and/or milky oil is present, then a re-seal is in order. If oil looks good, re-fill all three resevoirs and run her. There is alot of usefull info here and alot of people willing to help. good luck
