Hi All,

I was recently 'gifted' a 54 Evinrude 7.5HP model #7516. It came with a 2line tank and the original manual! I noticed that for '54 there are 4 models listed - 7514, 7515, 7516, 7517. My manual lists the 7514 & 7515 only, with the difference being the standard and long shaft versions.

Anyone know why there are 4? I can only assume that there are early 1954 and late 1954 models with some differences?

Also, my manual says that to replace the impeller I need to pull the powerhead, is that right? It looks like I could get at it from below, but haven't started pulling it apart yet.

Thanks!

Probably just different release times. I don't think there are any significant differences. Yes, I believe the powerhead must be removed to remove the shift rod.

You do have to remove the powerhead. be aware of the driveshaft spring and seal.. once you get the powerhead off. shoot..I need more rank!

Good little motors. I've got '55, '56, '57 and '58 versions myself. Keep the oil in them - they NEED 24:1 mixture. DO NOT let anyone tell you to run it leaner on oil. Richer, maybe, but not leaner.

Enjoy!

Just to add to the confusion at http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/About.Us/FAQ/Oil.Fuel.htm It says 20:1 for 1958 and earlier and 24:1 for 1959 to 1963.

In those days we did not have the TCW spec oils that we have now. I think I am right in saying that the manual refers to a SAE 30 engine oil!

Re: '54 Evinrude 7.5HP differences

Original mix was 16:1 with SAE 30W motor oil. I use 24:1 synthetic TC-W3 rated outboard oil in mine and I have a few of them in running condition (1954, 1955, 1956, 1958 x 2) and a few for parts.

I have no idea where they got the 20:1 in 1958 and old motors. Nothing changed significantly in 1959 except the addition of a thermostat in some models.

Does the 7.5 have the full roller bearings like my '59 18hp does? If so, I would confidently use the same 24:1 ratio with TCW-3.

No. All friction bearings. Here is the inside of a 1958 7.5 hp.

Oh, very cool picture, thank you!

It looks like I should stick with the 16:1 or 20:1 ratio then.

Yep, everything below the 10hp was a friction motor. Those are great motors and if treated right, will last forever. One these and the 5 1/2's, you do have to remove the powerhead to replace the waterpump and of course, be careful of the powerhead seal that the parts to fly away from you. Once you unhook the shift rod from the bellcrank and unbolt the lower unit, then it should come right off. You may have to wiggle it a bit to remove the lower unit, but that's normal. When you put it back together, apply a good coat of oil to the water inlet tubeand make sure that the powerhead seal is properly lubed as well. Make sure that the drive shaft is only turned in the clockwise direction, or the waterpump splines will get reversed and not work properly. It wouldn't hurt to apply a coat of oil to the impeller as you re-assemble it either, just to make it turn easier. Good luck, I hope this helps.

Sure makes working on em easier when a million 'lil roller pins don't fall out!!!

Man, those bearings are in nice shape! Must have lotsa oil :)

Re: '54 Evinrude 7.5HP differences

Ok, I am getting ready to order parts that I need to go thru this motor, so that I can do it all in a weekend coming up. This is what I have on the list:

Fuel Bowl Gasket 18-2892
O-ring top of driveshaft 18-7180
Impeller kit 18-3202
Carb kit 18-7043 *
float 396514
Gearcase seal kit 18-2679 *
coils (2) 18-5181
tune up kit (condensors and points) 18-5006 **

Is there a big seal all under the base of the powerhead that I need to replace? Anything else I missed?

* says 55-57, will it fit?
** says for '56-'58 will it fit?

Thanks,

You need a 303355 18-2892) gasket for the seal assembly, and a 303347 powerhead gasket (No Sierra #). Also a gasket for the muffler on the back if you wreck it, but they are usually OK.

The tune-up kit is OK,
The seal kit probably is not. It probably has the wrong diameter seals I'd have to do some research on that question.

Re: '54 Evinrude 7.5HP differences

Thanks FR, I really appreciate the help.

So, is the fuel bowl gasket the same as the gasket for the seal assembly? Or did I read the post I got that from incorrectly? I have one of the 18-2892 on my list, do I need two of them?

I will have to break down and get a parts book. It is unfortunate that they cost so much and only cover 1 motor, when you have a handful of motors.

Thanks again,

Re: '54 Evinrude 7.5HP differences

This was a good thread I stumbled across, especially the oil mixture part, not easy to find a good answer for it :D

I wanted to ask though, there is no water thermostats on these engines right? Mines a 1957 Evinrude 7.5hp. Making sure before I assume a clog.

Having issues with water flow and the pump impeller and accessories seem fine.

Thanks guys!
