I have a 1975 135 johnson and I am getting a little water in one of the bottom cylinders making it run not well, changed head gasket and exust gasket, pushed piston all the way to the back and evertthing in the cylinder looks good? what else am I missing?

There are two exhaust gaskets and both need to be in good shape. Many of the leaks in your engine came from not having the center bolt on the exhaust cover correctly mounted after servicing. The 1975 135 motors did have the improved screws, but they still need to be checked carefully.

See the Service Bulletin by clicking the attached thumbnail, please.

talked to the technition and he said that they changed both gaskets and knew all about the centering screw, anything else that you could think of

It is possible to get water into the cylinders with too much water pressure if running on a hose or by having the motor too deep in the water as when loading/unloading the boat onto/off a trailer.

not on a hose, and shouldn't it clear out after running a while

Maybe a litlle more information about what you have done and are doing in the first place could shorten the discussion a tad.

You can easily get water in the cylinders from the fuel tank if the fuel is not fresh.

after changing the head gaskets and exust gaskets, I put fresh gas in a portable tank and it still didn't run well pulled the spark plug on that same cylinder and it was wet again, all other cylinders are high and dry. Also checked the compression in that cylinder and it was good

My best shot is that you have a cracked cylinder or your head gasket did not seal. The head bolts should have been re-torqued to spec after the initial break-in run.

Find out if the bolt holes were chased before the head bolts were replaced; if they were full of junk the bolts won't be tight enough to seal the cylindert heads no matter how much torque was used.

ok will do, i just came back from running it again and I noticed on the cylinder that is giving the problem that a gasket is leaking to the out side. I 'm not sure what you call it but it is the triangle piece of metal that is ahead of the cylinder if that makes sence, after getting the engine warm it starts to leak and the substance looks the same colour (grey milky) as what the plug on that cylinder looks like.

Re: water in 135 johnson

It is unusual for water to get into the cylinders through a new head gasket unless the head is warped. Was the head checked for flatness prior to being reinstalled? Exhaust leaks are somewhat difficult to nail down, as any leak tends to accumulate water in the lowest cylinder in the block. A retorque on all bolts (both heads and exhaust cover) is a good idea after the powerhead had been through one heat/cool cycle. I struggled with this very problem on an 83 V6. After removing the exhaust covers twice, I found a water leak. The inner exhaust cover had casting porosity and was leaking water direct into the exhaust chest and into #6. Aluminum welded the bad spot and it has been fine ever since.
