Hey everyone,

We have had 3 boats, 2 20 footers and now a 17. We all know the rule of a certain percentage of weight on the tongue etc

The first 20' Bayliner had a trailer, single axel with probably 200-250 lbs on the tongue, I could lift it, with some effort.

The second 20' Bayliner was on a tandem axel trailer, with no weight at all on the tongue.

My 17' Starcraft is on a Starcraft single axel trailer, i think all the weight, or most of it is on the tongue, i cant even lift it.

The axel is not adjustable, nor is the tongue. I have never bought a trailer by itself before, what would be a good one to buy, preferably a bunk trailer?

Can you post a picture of the current trailer? Why can't you extend the bunks some and move the winch stand back? Where are you? Lots of trailer builders here, and lots of used trailers. Have you tried Craig's list?

Here is a picture of the boat on the trailer, i havent taken one of the trailer itself. I dont think i can move the winch stand back, its on a welded crossbar.

Can you try attaching the pic? I don't have a Facebook account. If you saw my face you'd understand  It's in Advanced, Manage Attachments . . . Or you can use the pic link from your Facebook account to post a pic within the thread (little Mountain Icon thing above). Try and stay at or under 640 x 480. Thanks.

Okay . . . You can also head down to Non-Boating Technical for an excruciatingly detailed tutorial on posting pics. Or if you simply pasted the link to the pic itself here I'd post it for you . . . right click on pic and copy the URL in Properties, Location

Example: http://i.ebayimg.com/06/!BToq2ZQ!mk~$(KGrHgoOKjoEjlLm(,tvBKJeb2Z!pg~~_2.JPG

Edit: How flippin' weird is that? The space between the P and G is not there when I edit or paste, only when I post it . . .  I can take that space out and the link works . . .

Re: Trailers, and playing trailer roulette

You have room to move her back some as is although your winch stand may not move further aft. As long as the transom is not hanging off of the bunks you should be OK. You could even make longer bunks for 1/20 the cost of a trailer. If that winch stand was straight up it'd go quite a bit further aft . . .

If you click that little mountain thingy and paste in that link that's how you post pics. Yours is hosted by Facebook . . .

HMMM, how permissable is it to cut and weld the winchstand?

move the axle forward

That type of trailer is a fixed axle...moving the winch stand back is the only option if he has room...
If it tows ok and no sway at highway speeds i would leave it alone.

Thanks, we bought it from a marine mechanic, when never had time to take it out cause he was fixing other peoples boats, the hr meter only has 50 hrs on it.

We tow it with a 99 Explorer 4.0, but with all the weight on the tongue, it gives the rear suspension a real workout.

Re: Trailers, and playing trailer roulette

A foot will make a difference and probably not hang too much off the bunks. The risk is a hook in the hull, which is a big deal. But . . . I don't think that risk is severe if it's hanging off say 6" . . . If you can get us a better pic of the winch stand and mounting points we could help decide this. Also measure how much of the bunks are sticking out behind the transom.
