The hose you are talking about is use for just in case the diaphram inside the pump fails so it will send the fuel to the carb instead of the hull of your boat to prevent BIG BOOM!!! I didn't have one on my last pump for my 165hp but I changed to pump to one that does have one just for extra safety. If I were you and if the old pump works, spend the extra $1.50 to get a gasket and put the old pump on the new motor. Good luck and keep me informed on your progress with this motor. I'm a big fan of the 165hp Inline 6.

Was the new motor older than the old one? They stopped using the 2 port Fuel pump in 78. That's when they came out with the 3 port one. If the new motor is that old that is probably why. If it's not then most likely the person you got it from replaced the pump with the older style pump not knowing the affects.
