Starting Motor Tub Of Water......

I have a 1985 Bayliner with a 125 Force motor. I want to try to adjust timing at home. I am going to put the motor in a tub of water and the manual states when doing this to remove prop. No problem, but my question is- can I get an acurate adjustment on the motor if it's not under normal load(with the prop on it)?
Thanks to whomever replys.....

I live in Arizona so lakes are kind of scarce but thanks for the reply.

Re: Starting Motor Tub Of Water......

I read instructions online from "the marine doctor" that said you can adjust the timing w/o starting the motor. Here they are...note I haven't tried this yet.
This it an outline for Outboard Engines only.

Turn the flywheel to TDC. <----Top piston...Top Cyl

Turn the cog on the distributor so that the half moon aligns with the flywheel <----arc follows the contour of the flywheel.

Slip the belt on.

Turn the Flywheel so that your timing pointer is set to 30 deg on the flywheel <---should be stamped on it.

Remove the top spark plug lead and make a make shift spark checker
Advance the throttle to WOT IN gear
Turn the key to ON
If the spark checker snaps...its timed correctly.
IF it does NOT spark...adjust the small set screw that is on the throttle tower, you will have to loosen off the 7/16 nut that holds it in place.
Once you have it sparking...tighten the nut...and press on the belt...it should spark.
If I?m going to be rotating the flywheel by hand remove the plugs so it doesn?t try to start

You should be setting your timing up using the starter without running the engine. The adjustment screw on the trigger is so close to the flywheel, you will lose some digits if you slip trying to adjust the timing with the engine running.

Don't take unnecessary risks.

Re: Starting Motor Tub Of Water......

Thanks all very much for all your suggestions. I think I am going to just do it at a lake. ***** I have one issue with the timing marks though. There are not any individual degree marks on the flywheel itself. There are only 2 factory marks approx. 3" apart and then the timing indicator mark bolted to the block just above the two carbs. Stumped....For the knowing motor is a 1985 Force-125hp.

Thanks Again To All,

The two marks are as follows.

Set the flywheel so the marks are facing you. The mark on your right is the TDC mark. The mark on your left is the 32 degree BTDC mark.
