That is military slang for the gold braid that senior officers wear on their hats; Lieutenant Colonel and up in the Army, Marines and Air Force, Commander and up in the Navy and Coast Guard.
My family and our ancestors have served our country (and England before the Revolution) for at least 8 generations. That is as far back as I have researched.
I am so proud that it brings tears to my eyes. Number 2 daughter, Alice Cooper, has just been promoted Commander in the USNR.
Alice joined the Navy right out of High School in 1975 and served in the same squadron (VR-21) that I was in when she was born. After marrying and becoming a Mom she was discharged and went to college and grad school on her GI Bill. She rejoined the Navy Reserve as an Ensign after graduation in 1984. She is a physical therapist.
You go, girl.
