How did my motor get water in it and the gas line.

Any info would be appreciated. I took my boat in for its annual maintence. Oil change ect.. I have a 75 mercury on a pontoon. While at the marina they took a bad fuel sender off and said the part would not be in for a few more days. I asked if I could use the boat over the weekend and they said ok and put it in the water. I filled up with gas at their dock and proceeded on my way. About 2hours after that the boat just gurggled and shut off. (mid lake of course). The marina was kind enough to tow me in but now say its going to cost me 1400.00 to fix. I have never ever had a problem with this motor and seems awful fishy that it happens right after I leave their dock after they worked on it. Does anybody know how the water could have gotten into the line/motor? Thanks so much. Mollie

Did they take the old fuel sender out and leave the tank open sitting in the rain?

It rained. When you say tank open. Like the cover off? I can't prove it. Boat my boat was soaked when I got it back.

That would be my thought then. When the fuel baffle/sender is out the tank has a hole in the top of it perfect for water to get into.

If they are stupid enough to leave the fuel tank open to the weather they are probably stupid enough to allow water into their own fuel tanks. Everyone needs to have a water separator filter on their motor.
