Re: what's a good hobby?

I?m surprised as to how many of us are into the R/C thing. I built my first kit at the age of 15 (Kyosho Outrage). I used to be strictly into cars and trucks. After I started building and flying I lost some interest in land based R/C. I have two boys and they both still enjoy it. What is appealing about it is the relatively low cost. I can do an engine swap for $60-$170. I wish the boat engine was that cheap.

My first was a Kyosho Ultima (narrow chassis one). I got it 24 years ago, and get this, I STILL HAVE IT! It runs and my kids play with it.

If you want to get your kid an RC car, bypass walmart and go right to the hobby shop.

When your boss tells you your working to hard and you need a hobby, It's really boss code meaning your not working hard enough so that they have more time for their hobby. Did he offer you paid time off? a raise? any thing to make your life better ??? NO? I rest my case.

Oh yea:) BTDT and still have all my buckets and stuff. I didn't care for all the bottle washing but the rest is pretty fun. Always tasted everything that went into it. Boiled up my wort on the grill's side burner so it wouldn't smell up the house.:D

Well, if you are a Frank Zappa fan, you might consider becoming a dental floss tycoon. But then, of course, you would have to move to Montana!

I picked up fly tying. Course it makes it more fun if your a fly fisherman. It's easy to do and fun.

Yeah first it's fly fishing then fly tying, then you start thinking "I want a really nice fly rod" and go into shock when you see the prices and decide that hey I can build one and save some dollars.
and after a couple of rods later someone shows you a new st. croix you say " that's nice but it's store bought"
I'm ok though I haven't given in to the call of bamboo (yet)

My longest running hobby is playing guitar. I also like to build computers & game a bit. I love to fish, but it takes a bit more effort to get to the water. Keep in mind that any hobby can become cash monster, so choose wisely.

Now that is a VERY good point! Fishing can be as simple as a $2 rod and reel purchased from a yard sale and a can of worms. Or it can be a $30,000 bass boat towed by a $50,000 RV... or even a $250,000 bluewater fishing machine with $5,000 SEATS! LOL! :D

The same applies to other hobbies as well.

I can easily say, if I get any more hobbies, I'll have no time for work! Easy rule of thumb for a good hobby: Do everything you normally pay to have done, yourself. You will no longer have time for work and your boss will hate that you have too many hobbies in no time flat.

Easy rule of thumb for hobby finding #2: The next few things you find yourself saying "That would be cool/fun to do" .. do it or take lessons/a class to learn to do it. Heck, learning is likely my #1 hobby. On Tuesday I'm taking my electricians exam. Why not, right?

That's a good point. I've always thought it would be kind of cool to learn how to play a guitar. Not sure what I'd do w/that skill once I learned it, but maybe I'll check into it.

Tried talking my wife into getting a snowmobile or ATV for the colder seasons up here, but that got shot down. I'll need to invest a little in the house before she'll warm up to that idea. Onward and upward!

Yea I too am impressed how many of us are into the rc thing. I've been flying planks for several years, and just started with the electric heli's about 2 years ago. It really gives me time to mellow out, and it's easy to make time for it. I like to carry my trex500 in my truck alot, while i'm in between accounts or during a lunch break find a small field, or park and put in a few minutes of flight time.

I'm also into playing drums, and keyboards(mallet percussion). I used to do it more, actually i competed quite often in highschool. I wasn't too bad if I say so myself. Brought home lots of awards. After highschool I marched Matrix Indoor percussion in the winter months, as well as marched DCI with the Blue Coats until I aged out. It was a blast.

Re: what's a good hobby?

Speaking of R/C aircraft... I was in Harbor Freight Tools the other day and they had a little Piper J-3 electric with a 3-channel radio that I was VERY tempted to buy. The price was $80 though, so I passed. Had the price been more like $40 or $50, I would have bought the little foam plane. They also had a P-51 Mustang for the same price. Neato.

I do have room to fly a small plane or chopper here at my place.

Re: what's a good hobby?

Kind of funny to see so many into the R/C stuff. I use to be really big into the R/C planes and eventually got into giant scale. It taught me a lot and turned into a career for me. :) Now I don't touch the R/C stuff haha. I sold most of R/C planes and helis and the only thing I tinker around with is an indoor electric heli.

I'm into powersports. Love stand up jet skis (i know so many of you will cringe), ATVs, and dirtbikes. I also read a lot... but mostly when I'm sitting in a hotel in a boring city or sitting at an airport waiting for our passengers to arrive.

Re: what's a good hobby?

My hobby is doing everything possible to avoid getting a real hobby, too darn expensive and time consuming...

Oh crap, I just realized I bought a boat that needs a tonne of work.

Well, there goes my no-hobby hobby...

we cant tell you what hobby to have.

I have had a few hobbies over the years.

first it was cars, from the age of 12 I couldnt get enough of them.

at 25 I got divorced and got in to motorcycles

at about 28 got back in to fishing

last year bought a small boat.

currently thinking about lure making or rod building.

it has always been a "hey thats kinda neat, I should try that"

When my son was just turning into a teen, we got involved in slot car racing. Lots of fun for a modest price. They have many different classes and is very competitive at the track meets. Now he is grown and miss those days.....:(
