Re: 57 Johnson 18hp - Top Cylinder Missing/Fouling Plug

Wow, that's a nice specimen! Brand new prop???? Looks like a really well taken care of motor. I'll bet you wind up loving it as much as I do mine. It looks nice and clean under there. It may be you just need to clean and regap the points. --but I doubt it. Those condensers and coils look like they're pretty old to me. Most of the new condensers I get don't look like that. I do think they've been replaced since the motor was new, though. When you get the $10 harmonic balancer puller, spring for a $6 autozone spark tester, too. I like to test my spark before I torque down the flywheel so I don't have to use the puller all over again. If it's working right, you should be able to turn that flywheel by hand with the plugs out and get a good spark. If it's right, it doesn't take much to make some spark. DON'T forget to torque that flywheel nut back down to 45ft-lbs.! If you don't you could have problems.
good luck,
JBJ

Thanks JB, yeah the guy I got it from said it maybe had 30hrs on it??? It is really clean under the hood. I got the motor on the back of a 15ft alum Seaking with a like new trailer. I just got redone redoing the whole boat. I picked up the whole deal for $375, I was really wanting the boat and trailer, the motor was an added bonus.

You got a super deal! If I were you, I'd hang on to that motor. It's hard to find one in that condition and once you get the ignition redone, it is in my opinion one of the most trustworthy ever. Actually, all the 50's and 60's 18's were super reliable, the '57 is just the best looking!;)
I think it would look great and run great on that boat. It looks really nice. You can't beat a boat that comes with an FD-11 AND a little fishing buddy, too!:p
Enjoyed the pics,

Yeah at first I was thinking, oh great an old motor..... see if it runs still. But I think Ive been bit by the bug now, its going to look cool on the boat, it still has that old school look to it with the covered front end and all.

Thats my first mate in the picture, took her out fishing Memorial weekend for the first time, caught her first two fish, that she reeled in all by herself, she got them in the boat and said.... "WOW, that was amazing!!". If that dont make a dad proud I dont know what would. A couple days ago I was getting the floor in the boat and putting the seats in, she wanted to get in the boat, I lifter her and and she looks around and says "Dad.... Im so proud of you". Notice who gets the top spot in the rod holder, kinda hard to see....

$375? What a screaming deal. That boat motor and trailer up here would be well over C$1k. Consider yourself lucky.

Pull the flywheel... It scare the crap outa you the first time as you'll think you broke it but all will be well... Then you can clen up the important stuff and all will be well...

JBJ... you got it wrong... the '58's are the best looking year :)

Maybe so Steve, but I don't own a '58 yet, so that's my story and I'm sticking to it!;)

Come on now guys, lets not turn my thread into a beauty contest, besides.... mine is the best, even if it doesnt run worth a crap right now. :D

Alright, parts have been ordered, here is what I've got coming.

2 - 18-5181 Ignition Coils
1 - 18-5006 Tune Up Kit
1 - 18-7043 Carb Kit
2 - 18-5750 Spark Plug Cover

My plan of attack is to do the coils, points, and condensors first and see what happens. If I follow along the Top Secret post regarding this will I be all set? Also regarding the spark plug wires... I got the plug covers ordered, are these both ends for the wires and can I buy wire from autozone that will work with the ends?

Re: 57 Johnson 18hp - Top Cylinder Missing/Fouling Plug

:D My parts came today!!!! I stopped to Autozone and picked up the flywheel puller and I even sprung for one of those spark testors, my buddy is stealing some puller bolts from his work and a set of feeler gauges for the points.

So my question still is, if I follow right along to the Top Secret Post am Im good to go? Do I have to worry about any torque settings other than the flywheel nut (40-45lbs for mine correct)? I havent got my manual yet so I just want to be sure my thinking is correct, pull the flywheel off take out the old stuff one side at a time and put it back in the same way it came out.

And Im still curious about the plug wires, what I ordered ended up being just the boot ends that slip over the plugs, can I get the rest from Autozone or do I have to order something special?

There should be a little spring looking thing that has a little sharp barb on it that you stick into the end of the spark plug wire. Then you slide the boot over it.
I can't think of anything else that needs torquing other than the flywheel nut. Be careful you don't overtorque the spark plugs.
Good luck,
JBJ

Make sure you get the right kind of spark plug wire. Regular automotive spark plug wire won't work. You want metal core wire. Auto zone probably won't stock it unless they happen to cater to the hot rod crowd.

Well of course its a special type of wire..... , when I was ordering parts I thought Im not paying that much for a wire, I'll just stop to Autozone......

I guess I'll just try to use my old wires, im sure they are fine. Just jinked myself didnt I?

Well, still try autozone anyway. You might get lucky. I got some from my local CarQuest store. They had an old spool of it in the back. Of course it was bright @$$ yellow  !

If you do opt to reuse your old ones (I wouldn't recomend it) I'd suggest that you flip them around and use the spark plug end in the coil and vice-versa. Clip off the end just where the spark plug clip stuck through the side of the wire. Your most likely spot for a failure is where the wire was clamped to the under side of the mag plate. Good luck! And remember there's never enough time to do it right. But there's always enough time to do it over! :)

Cheers.............Todd

Do you know what size wire it uses.... like 8mm or 7mm???

I called PepBoys, they didnt sell it by the foot, but it was $75 for a pack of it?? He told me Napa sells it by the foot so I'll have to check with them and Autozone tomorrow.

But 8mm will work. Any solid core will work. I read one guy used 5mm or 6mm (I forget which, but it was small) as it had to fit somewhere small...

I've got the boots, I found the part number for the wire that is just a ft long piece (18-8818-1), but then I have to wait for it to ship and pay for shipping. So Im going to hit the auto parts stores in the neighborhood first.
