Exhaust water shutter

I operate a vessel with twin 165 Mercs.
This season the port engine intermittently shows evidence of water contamination in the oil. That is, a greyish brown sludge appears on the dipstick and oil filler cap. The oil on the bottom of the dipstick is NOT milky.

The evidence completely disappears on starightforward non stop runs, but reappears when engaged in stop / go / reverse - holding station activities. I suspect the exhaust water shutter may be the cause? Thoughts?

Re: Exhaust water shutter

Ayuh,... Sounds like Condensation that burns off to Me...

A lost shutter can't put water in the oil, When Running...
A lost shutter blocking the exhaust flow will cause runability problems....

Are these 165s I-6s, or I-4s,..??
Fresh, or raw water cooled,..?? Saltwater,..??

Re: Exhaust water shutter

Slow on the reply. Sorry!

These are 165's - straight 6's.
This boat is on the move quite a bit - 30 hrs and 400 NM since mid-April. We wont talk about fuel costs!!

Absolutely no trace of water in oil on last run?

The mechanic wants to haul the boat to change the shutter. He thinks it is just at the water line?
