Hooked battery up to charger and am now getting spark on 2,3,4. Will swap parts/connections to narrow it down.

Re: No spark on #1 and #4 after rebuild

You check for spark to test the ignition with all of the plugs out so that the engine can turn at a full 300 RPM. Your test gap should be 7/16 and produce a snappy blue spark. Be sure that your test device is fully grounded.

If you do not get spark on one ignition coil, swap it with another to see if the problem follows the coil.

The ignition coils need to be solidly grounded, so be sure to clean the mounting surface as well as the grounding strap. The spark plug wires have to be solid core, not automotive.

Swapped coils from left to right and problem followed coils. Getting good spark on spark tester at 7/16 on the one set and nothing on the other...

any idea what year/hp coils fit 1979 115 hp Evinrude?

Standard part. Use the BRP parts catalog for your 1979 model. Click the diagram number on the Ignition diagram and it will take you to the part number. Click the magnifying glass on the part # and it will give you superseding # if any. http://shop.evinrude.com/

Looks like OEM is 581998, superseded to 584561.

You can use the aftermarket ones sold here at iboats - I like the CDI coils: http://www.iboats.com/Johnson_Ignit...z.36857--**********.835750282--view_id.271400

These appear to be single coils as opposed to the double ones that are on there now. Anything else needed or do I just splice the wires and not use the old connectors?

The 4 single units on the cylinder heads are the ignition coils. It is possible that someone changed it to the double ignition coils.

Could you post a picture?

Here is a picture. The 2 coils are attached by the orange wires.

I would replace the circled ignition coils on cylinders #2 and 4.

If they are bad, they may have already damaged the blue powerpack to their left.

Right, but the coils are attached together as a set, and have just one plug for the 2 coils going to the power pack. When using the new style coils, do I just splice each one into the single plug for the power pack?

The parts should come with the insert for the amphenol plug. You can push the old one out of the plug. Use denatured alcohol to lubricate the extraction and implant.
