I have a 1987 Mercury 25HP outboard on my pontoon boat. Ran fine last year, fired right up and ran great. Now this year, getting the boat ready, tried to test fire the motor and it won't fire at all.

Popped out the plugs..wet with gas...(gas is fresh)..checked to see if any spark, and there is NONE...

After reading around the web a bit, I figured the swithbox had gone bad, so I bought a new one, wired it in, and still NO SPARK...

So, my question is...What now??

By the way, the fuse is good, continuity test was good.

Battery is giving me 12.5 volts at the solenoid. I do have a meter to check voltage, ohms, etc, but I really don't know where to begin to see what else could be wrong.

Where should I go next?

Thanks for the help, greatly appreciated.

Does your motor have a kill switch? Make sure that is working good!!

Yes, it has a kill switch. It was also tested, and was ok. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I am in the same situation. 25 hp that has no spark.

I HAVE TRIED A BRAIN BOX THAT I KNOW IS GOOD / I HAVE CLEANED ALL THE GROUNDS / I HAVE CHECKED ALL THE WIRE CONNECTIONS / I HAVE CHECKED BOTH KILL SWITCHES TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE OK / I HAVE CHECKED THE STATOR AS BEST I COULD ALTHOUGH I DON'T KNOW IF IT WAS RIGHT / I HAVE PUT NEW PLUGS IN / I HAVE CLEANED ALL THE CONNECTIONS ON THE COILS / I JUST DON'T SEEM TO BE GETTING POWER TO THE COILS

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1987 25HP Merc..NO SPARK..help!

I took the stator and trigger off last night, and am going to have them tested at my local marine. I hope they can tell me which part is the problem. I tested the stator my self for ohms, and found it to be below what it should be. The trigger was also off, so I am thinking I will be replacing both of them, but the marine's mechanic will either confirm what I found or not, so I will just have to wait and see. While I am at it, I may as well replace the coils too, they are pretty cheap compared to the switchbox and stator. The trigger is not too expensive. So after I replace everything, I should be good for a good while to come hopefully. After all, these parts are over 20 years old, so I can't really expect them to last forever. It's strange though, last season, the motor ran so well, and this spring, NO SPARK AT ALL.

If you have a testing meter, it's not to hard to test the parts yourself, while you have cover off. I wish you luck. When you check, you check for ohms and volts as DVA. My meter couldnt do the DVA volts, but could do the Ohms, (resistance). So I dunno if the ohms cans be off and still be ok or not, so thusly, am going to the mechanic.

Best of luck.

I will let ya know how my testing comes out with the mechanic.

Got it running!!

Well, after replacing the stator and one coil, the motor is running. However at 3/4 to full throttle, it cuts out, so still not 100%, but at least the spark is back. Bought a used coil for $20. So I will be selling the new powerpak, since it was NOT the issue....it was the stattor...so there you have it..
