Evinrude 85hp tach problem

I just got a aftermarket auto tach for my 74 evinrude 85hp. When I hook it up to the existing gray tach lead and also to 12+ and ground I get no reading. I tried every wire on the wire block and also tried tapping directly off the rectifier. Everything I have tried failed. Is there some trick that I'm not seeing?

Thanks,
Greg

Re: Evinrude 85hp tach problem

Not sure that an auto tach will adapt to the marine environment. Marine outboard tachs are made to count the pulses from the charging system on the engine. There is a selector switch on the back of the marine tachs that let you set it for the type of pulses that your engine puts out-yours should probably be set at 6.

Re: Evinrude 85hp tach problem

Before I got the new tach I read a few posts on this forum and most said that a auto tach would work. I have tried all the settings on the back of the tach 4,6,8 and I get no reading on any of them.

Thanks,
Greg

Re: Evinrude 85hp tach problem

ok, I picked up a Teleflex tach. Just got done trying to install it but something is still wrong. Tried the factory wiring no results, tried wiring to the wire block and battery. Still nothing. This is my first boat, so I don't really know what I'm doing. But I have done a lot of car wiring.

Thanks,
Greg

Is your battery being charged?

Check out the rectifier testing method here to see if your rectifier is the culprit. Darn things blow kind of easy if you hook up a battery or a charger up wrong.:( try this link to test your rectifier

Re: Evinrude 85hp tach problem

Test the tachometer at the engine by connecting the gray S wire to the solid gray wire on the terminal block, taking the positive voltage from the battery connection at the solenoid, and taking the negative by ground to the engine block.

If the tach reads good there, connect the wiring at the remote by running new wires for positive and negative from the ignition switch and splicing to the gray sender wire which should be taped inside the control.

Be very careful to have the battery disconnected when wiring; any voltage to the gray wire will instantly destroy the rectifier.

The remote is wired as shown in the thumbnail.

Set the tachometer at 6P.

When you turn the ignition key to run with the engine off, the tach dial should snap to zero.
