I bought this engine used this year (compression good, lower unit oil good, impeller replaced 1 year ago) and have had it out about 4 times for some quick test runs. I put it on a 1987 17? Ozark modified tri replacing my blown 88 SPL. Did the following just to be safe on this engine:
1.Replaced thermostats (tested new) and relief springs put on dual temp gauges and water pressure all is good there
2.Rebuilt carbs and replaced plastic bowls with aluminum
3.Replaced fuel lines/in-line filter/primer bulb/new Yamaha water sep filter/cleaned vent on tank
4.New plugs
5.ohmed out plug wires and had to re-do a couple ends timing light on wires at idle show all firing
6.replaced roller on throttle (was missing outer sleeve and had some serious slack)
7.link and sink
8.did need to replace regulator/rectifier
None of these things changed how the engine runs. It will push the boat up to around 39 MPH best @ about 5200 RPM with an 18 pitch. Push in the primer at 5000 RPM makes the engine bog down (getting plenty of fuel?) My friend has the same boat except still with the 88 SPL and he runs same speed with a 19 pitch. So I decided to de-carb and since I had the shrader valve on the primer I went with the engine tuner. Ran about half the can in the driveway (stopped because of the smoke) and ran it the next day at the lake. Not running VRO i am mixing? guessing lots of HRS on this engine from talking to PO.
I have no noise at idle, planning, full throttle but if I back off when planed up cruising @ about 25 mph 4000 rpm the engine chatters? Did I remove the carbon that was keeping the pistons from slapping around in the cylinders?
