One silly, yet simple question and although I have run it and it runs well and I think I do even know the answer, I'll ask it anyway:

Do these motors pee??

I know it'll suck in water and I ran it for a good 10 minutes in a barrel and it ran great. It didn't overheat. But where does the water that has already been through the block, leave the motor?

Thanks for this - you have a fantastic site here.

Dont expect a 59 model pees.
Pee holes are only teltales to show that the pump is working. Even with a telltale the bulk of the water leaves with the exhaust gases. Guess its got an exhaust releif hole on the leg. You should see some water, a mist or a few drops leaving from there

Thanks Vic! I thought that's what it was but was not sure. I saw no holes anywhere that might indicate such. One confirmation. Thanks.

Your motor has a tell tale. It is the very small holes about half way down the mid-section. You should see a little water shoot out them while running. Don't worry if you don't see much.

I just replaced the pump in my 18hp '57, that sucker was pumping water out of it. But am sure happy I replaced the old one, two of the impeller arms were barely hanging on. Wasnt bad to replace either... thanks to the experts on this site. :D

It's on my list of things to do. Hopefully not too involved. I'll keep an eye on the tell tale holes then to see if they are at least weeping or not.
Thanks everyone!

Its super easy. Just remove the four bolts that hold the lower unit on and pull down. The impeller is located in a housing at the base of the driveshaft. Grease the the driveshaft and splines when replacing. Replace the o-ring on top of the driveshaft as well.

The impeller should be replaced every 1-5 years (depending who you talk to).

Re: '58 Johnson JW14

I just received my rebuild kit in the mail today. Will attempt tonight and possibly take some photo's too.

One further question: I can't get the motor to run too slowly before it stalls. WOT is fine and the motor starts and runs perfectly otherwise. Carb cleaning time? Could I also run some Seafoam through it to clean things out that I can't see?

Run some Seafoam through it in the tank...might even want to do a full decarb, it'll smoke like crazy so that may not be an option at your house. Might also be time to clean/rebuild the carb.

Try adjusting the low speed jet.

I don't believe there is a shift rod on the 3hp - no gears at all and reverse is just spinning the tiller around 180 degrees.

I've used Seafoam on just about everything I own for years. Works like a charm and around my area no one will care:D

I don't have a manual for this motor and this I'll have to find the low speed jet, ensure it's clean and then I guess adjust from there - thanks for the obvious tip wbeaton.

More updates to come after tonight's progress.

Re: '58 Johnson JW14

Update: - new impeller, wear plate, o-ring and pump seal installed - spitting out all 8 tell-tale holes nicely now!! Thanks folks. No I didn't snap any pictures - it's been raining here for 3 days and I didn't want to risk getting the camera (Nikon D200) wet at all.

Ran some sea-foam through the fuel tank and let it run for about 20 minutes then shut it off. Adjusted the idle screw as well - idle is better (lower rpm) but not perfect.....still wants to stall. More tinkering required. But does it ever run smoother now at low-mid rpm.

I'm happy - thanks for everyone's help here!:D

Re: '58 Johnson JW14

That's good news. Are you trying to adjust the idle with the motor on a boat or in a tank? Take it for a good run and set the high speed needle for best operation at WOT. Then set the idle.

Good luck.

Ya running in a tank right now. But I had it behind a 12' aluminum a month ago up in Parry Sound and WOT is actually fine - it runs excellent.

Two guys in a 20-something-foot bass boat with a big Black Max behind it stopped right in front of us to look at it - they couldn't believe how well it was running:cool:

Anyway - at slow idle it starts to hesitate - no misfiring or backfiring - just ready to stall pretty much. Time to unclog and clean things and go from there.

Re: '58 Johnson JW14

Try adjusting the low speed needle with it running on a boat after it warms up. They don't always idle well in a barrel. Also, if you are trying to adjust the idle to be at its slowest at the point where the lever reaches the "slow" mark on the motor then you may also be asking too much. You could be retarding the mag too much. The marks are only a guideline. Some idle down nicely at the "slow" mark others above or below it.
