1996 Evinrude Intruder dies at take-off

My 96 Evinrude 150 Intruder starts fine at cold start, idles and runs fine through all revs. The problem occurs when re-starting after having stopped for a while. The engine will start, but as soon as I put it into gear it splutters and dies. This occurs several times. Ultimately what I have been doing is sitting with it idling for a few minutes and then going. After that it runs like a dream (even at low revs) until the next stop?!?! Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Another query (unrelated to my first - I think) When I run at anything over 1/2 throttle under load, I get an alarm every 3 seconds or so. The check engine lights all illuminate and then go off - as though I'm starting up. It is using oil and is not overheating. The oil reservoir level is correct. Is this an electrical problem, fuel restriction problem, vacuum switch problem, or other problem? How would I be able to find out.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

J/E Alarms

low oil alarm is a beep every 30 seconds. beep......................beep...................

no oil alarm is a beep every 1/2 second or so.beep, beep, beep

overheat and fuel restriction alarm is a constant beep.beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

my 1st idea is you have a float needle not seating properly flooding a carb.

Thanks for the response.

I don't think it is any of those alarms as its not as frequent as every 1/2 second but is more frequent than every 30 seconds. As I said, its as though I'm starting up with the lights going on on the dash with the system check. The only thing is, is that its doing it while I'm already running (1/2 throttle and up)?? Its confusing the hell out of me. Occasionally the rev counter also bounces from running to zero to whatever I'm running at. Could it be something as simple as a loose connection, a poor signal from the flywheel or, as someone suggested to me, perhaps I'm not getting enough charge back from the engine. It doesn't happen at low revs or idle.

With regards to the bogging down and dying at take-off after a rest period. I have thought of the float needle not seating properly. The reason I suspected this was because the trim had an effect on the revs/stuttering when idling. I have already stripped the carbs totally, cleaned and reassembled as per the manufacturers manual. Could there be any other reasons? Its very confusing because it runs perfectly after a cold start.

Thanks.

On '96 up Systems Check engines, the alarms are different.
The alarm, for example overheat, will sound the warning horn for 10 secs, and the overheat light will go on in the tach. All the warning functions are defined in the tach, it just gets its signal from the engine tan wires.

You seem to be describing an intermittent open in the power supply (purple) wire going to the tach (or sys check gauge). Especially the part where the tach needle goes to zero, then back up.
This could be ignition switch related. Wiggle, jiggle, the ignition switch in the on position and see it you can re-create the problem.

The solution for the alarms and bouncing gauges was a loose power connection that was making contact every couple of seconds giving me the startup beep and system check - while running? I'm glad it was something as simple as that and not something more serious. It just took me a while to find it.

Re: 1996 Evinrude Intruder dies at take-off

I ran the engine the entire weekend on the water while fishing (with no alarms - bliss!) Initially, I had the same problem with cutting out when putting into forward when heading to another spot. However, the more I ran it, the less frequent this became until it didn't occur again. When I purchased the boat it had been standing for a year. I stripped and cleaned the carbs before using it. I'm hoping that the cause of my problems were either a buildup/blockage that has burnt off or worked itself out, or there was about a sixth of a tank of old fuel that I didn't flush out (due to it running okay on muffs - I only filled up) and this has now burnt off. I'll run it again this weekend and hopefully get the same results.

Good luck, i had that same problem for a long time. Turned out to be carbs out of sync and idle screws all out of wack. I know what you mean about trimming it down, it did seem to shutter more when you trimmed down. I never could find anything wrong with my float needles though. Next year its merc and hopefully no more headaches. I finally got that bog stall fixed and now mine just doesn't have the topend it used too. There seems to be no happy medium with this motor. Either you can deal with the bog stall or have a slug up on top, ho hum.
