I am trying to remove the powerhead from my 6hp 1990 evinrude. I've detached all the ancillaries from the powerhead, fuel lines , throttle, wiring etc. I've removed the 6 bolts that attach the powerhead to the upper leg but it wont budge. Am I missing anything (apart from a manual:confused:, on it's way from U.S).

cheers,

Re: Can't get the powerhead off

Not sure how similar this small of an outboard is compared to a 60hp, but I have 4 huge bolts that were under the lower cowl, 1 nut in the back, under the cylinder head, and of course you need to disconnect the shift linkage from the engine also as it's held on to the powerhead. Like I said, that was my '93 60hp I just worked on, your is a lot smaller and may be different, but at least it will give you a general idea until others with more knowledge chime in.

Re: Can't get the powerhead off

I remove the lower unit first from my '84 6hp. Never tried removing the power hear without. Would have to remove the LU to refit the power head anyway and refit the LU last.

Once the LU is off the powerhead can be rocked fore and aft to break the joint (not sideways as I tried first time .... inner exhaust tube prevents that)

Drive shaft and shift rod come away with the LU, watertube stays attached to the power head

All looks pretty much the same

BTW mine is a longshaft (Yachtwin actually) and the 5" extension has to be removed along with the LU but can be removed from the LU to get to the pump after cleaning up the driveshaft

Re: Can't get the powerhead off

Thanks for that info, mine is also a longshaft. I have removed the two bottom sections (gearcase and the extension piece), the drive shaft has come away but the shift rod is still attached. I was trying to figure out how to remove the lower unit, I guess you have to take out the rubber blocks that hold it to the part that the shift rod goes down.

I think I am going to have to wait untill my manual arrives for this!!

Re: Can't get the powerhead off

O.K got the powerhead off (took a bit of persuation). Removed the exhaust from the powerhead and got the offending broken water pipe out.

I think I could fabricate a new water pipe, I may have to use the top few inches of the old one and join it to a new peice. Unless I can get a new one a reasonable cost from the U.K.

It seems to have failed at the point where it goes through a hole in a supporting web inside the upper section. I would have thought this should have some sort of rubber bush to protect the pipe from vibration fatigue. I can't see anything on the parts diagram though.

Thanks for everyones help.

Re: Can't get the powerhead off

No recollection of the water tube passing through a web in mine but may be that's a detail I have simply fogotten.
Important I would say that in anything you make that the copper tube does not come in contact with the aluminium exhaust tube.

In the Uk two parts suppliers I'd suggest

Willsmarine in Kingsbridge

Oakley Marine, aka Outboards Direct, in Brighton.

Google will find them!

Re: Can't get the powerhead off

Thanks, spoke to Willsmarine. They can get me a water tube, ?37!!!!!!!! I think I will repair the broken one. It's the same diameter as standard microbore central heating pipe (10mm). The only issue is the lip on the top but I think I could cut off the top and rejoin to a new piece of pipe. They had the top gasket and rubber grommit in stock, very helpful too.
