my brakes have been shot for a while. boat rebuild is done, time for the trailer brakes.

i have a tandem with surge brakes on the rear axle. there's a leak somewhere to top it off. master cylinder is nice and rusty. i'm going to replace the coupler...off with the old, on with the new. i'm figuring i should replace the lines too?

my question is about the drums. what are the odds they they're still ok? how to test other than waiting for new coupler?

thanks

Re: overhauling hydraulic surge brakes

I just had to replace the lines on my trailer, surge disc, then I had to clean the rust off of the calipers and order new pads, so jack the trailer axle up, put it on blocks or jack stands, pull the wheels, hubs and drums, replace the wheel cyl, brake shoes and any rusted parts, clean inspect and replace or repack the wheel bearings and put in new seals, then you have no worries, probably needs it any way.

If you think it may help you click the link and watch the videos.

Re: overhauling hydraulic surge brakes

Repalce the lines. I ended up with a leak late last winter. I was going to freplace the leaking section and decided to just change out the whole thing.

Was going to install all SS tube but got talked into the all plastic lines. So far so good. I'll have to see how they hold up.

Drum brakes suck in SW. Got tired of messing with them all the time. Lasted 3 years top. Installed disc and never looked back. My Kodiak Disc are 2 years old and still look like new.
