I'm glad I found this place. My mom has an early 90's alumacraft 175 that was my father's fishing boat unil he passed away. It's been stored, covered but outside, for the last several years and now she wants to sell it. The problem is that we've discoved that the deck in the stern is rotten and we're considering replacing it. My questions are:

A) are we nuts for considering doing this ourselves?
B) What are the pitfalls that I'm not considering or don't know about?
C) Does anyone sell "kits" for this kind of thing? If so, who?

The mechanical abilities of those attempting this project are: Me: General carpentry and mechanic work, by brother-in-law - machinist and general carpentry, my brother - cabinetmaking.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

My opinion is that you should keep the boat and rebuild it....your skills are more than adequate for this type of project....You will find everyhing you need on this site....But if you really must sell it i would just sell it "as is" it;s rare to make money on a boat that has been rebuilt...the deck will cost about 500 or so if you do it right...I did my 1971 starcraft in 2 months by myself...search for "deck replacement" Good luck

Thanks for the advice Bigcarpy. We're probably going to tackle this project, if for no other reason than we can and we'll learn something doing it. The problem with keeping the boat is that none of us really want it (storage concerns) and neither does my mom.

We'll take this one on as a learning project.

Thanks again.

Welcome to iboats!!

Take a look at the projects that are inprogress here....many of the Starcrafts have aluminum hulls with wood decks ......do not use pressure treated in an aluminum hull.

Look at the completed project section. The newest project is a Lund that was refinished.
