A few weeks ago, it was the VP's that got let go and re-organized. Then they started working their way down the ladder. Yesterday, it was my boss's level. He was spared, thank goodness. He is the best boss I have ever had. Now the bad part. Next month the cross hairs are turned to my level.

Wish me luck!

Re: More layoff at work

My boss keeps telling me I have nothing to worry about. Over the last 2 years, due to layoffs, my group went from 3 people, to 2 people, now, its just me!!! Who's going to do the work if I get laid off?

Layoffs have come every 6 months or so over the last few years. It was nice to see the VP's finally get culled. You can only go to the well so many times, ya know?

If you put even half the amount of effort into your work as you do your boats then you'll be fine.

Good luck to you!

Last week we were told we would be cut back. Now were working as many hours as we can this week. We slowed down due to heat and the risk of forest fires. Its been an roller coaster year with no end in sight. One good thing is i don't think we will have any more layoffs.

Always think of the cup half full and never empty and you will do well.

Getting laid off is no problem. Its finding work to replace the money so you can still eat thats the problem..You could try to find some work that americans havent wanted to do before now but I think most of those jobs are already taken......sucks

Good luck Mark. It seems you have demonstrated your capabilities to the company and they recognize it. After all, you are still there and the others are not.

We are going on "work share" next week. Its a program, sponsored by the government, intended to preserve jobs during this economic downturn. We basically work 1/2 time (2 days one week, 3 days the next) but the government pays 66% of the wages for the days we don't work. Not full wages, but it sure beats the alternative of being laid off.

On the positive side I will have more time for boating.

Sure sucks !!!!
Hope all is well for you.
The corporation I work for has cut over 50% of the staff over the last 9 months or so. I am the only "travelling" Engineer left so I am hoping that is a good thing !!!

Re: More layoff at work

There was a meeting at work today about the next level being evaluated. Turns out they are looking for redundancy and want to merge departments that do similar work. An example is we had two different departments that did statutory changes and research (changes mandated by the government). They have been merged, and as a result, some folks were let go. In my area, that situation doesn't exist. I think me and my immediate co-workers are fairly safe from any further layoffs.

I hope! :D

Re: More layoff at work

I have been talking with my long time friend and he works for a clearing house for stock transactions. Its closely tied in with banks, and the whole banking industry is on such shaky ground its really scary. Especially when I got some inside poop on what is going on from my friend.

He has lost almost everyone in his department due to layoffs. The work is being shipped to India at a fraction of the cost of doing it here. He said if he is laid off, he would get a used van and go into the home remodeling/repairs business. But that will not cover his mortgage and taxes, and his savings will be gone in a few months. So the house would be sold (at a great loss due to the crappy housing market) and he would buy a cheap house in a low tax area. Probably move to PA.

I can't imagine what being laid off would do to me. At least I don't have a mortgage on my house, but taxes are $8000 year, plus kids college, etc. I would have to go into the home maint/repair business too, because there are no openings in my line of work.

When you stop and think about it, there are so many people in your own town who's lives have been totally re-arranged by loss of work. It is a national disaster. I see no relief in sight.
