Why forward when impeller changing

Why does the manual say to put the engine in forward when removing the lower end? The gear shift is rotating spline shaft and I fail to see the advantage of putting it in forward.
On my 9.9 it has the same instruction, but I can see the advantage of that one. It gives better access to disconnect the shift shaft at the top.

i cant tell you why for mine, i dont have to disconnect the shift shaft or anything.

BUT i just did mine with it in forward and redid it with it in reverse. the shift shaft has a certian point where it "springs" and spins (going from forward in neutral) and i noticed before putting mine back in that it had done that.

being in forward gives the advantage of rotating the prop to aline the splines on the drive shaft. also reverse does the same

I have used rev for about 40 year because there is less chance of the unit jumping gears. I think that the forward thing in the days of none racheting rev gears, people without brains enough to turn the prop when shifting into rev could twist the upper shiftshaft when shifting into rev.

Never mind the manual. The person writing it obviously didn't know anything about the engine.

Forward, so say's the manual because if you'll notice, the splines line up easily. However, if you're not carefull you can get the splines so far off that all you'll have is forward.

Personally, I now like neutral. If it doesn't slide in on the first shot, I drop it down a little and give the drive shaft a little turn clockwise and try again. Once the drive shaft is aligned I slide up to the shift shaft and then gently wiggle the shifter until it's lined up.

I usually have it all in by the third shot.
