I have a 2001 90 HP Johnson Outboard. It is mounted on a 2001 Sylvan 1700 Explorer.

The gas tank is under the floor in the boat.

My problem is the boat starts very hard especially after trailer or setting.

Some observations:

The primer ball does not get hard when I pump it up.

Sometimes it smells like the engine gets flooded when I am trying to start it.

Sometimes after it finally starts a large puff of smoke will come out.

Once started the motor runs great. It will idle all the way down and keep running with no issues.

My only problem is the very hard starting.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

What are the steps that you take in your starting procedure?

Pump the primer bulb 4-6 times. It is hard to tell if that is enough because it does not get hard.

Put the boat in neutral and move the throttle forward a bit

I will push the electronic chock 2-3 times then crank

What is the correct procedure?

do you leave the fuel line connected when tilting the motor for trailering. this put the carbs out of level, thus the float is out of level and allows fuel to flow. the bulb will not get hard if it is flowing thru the carb. flooding the motor. with motor in upright postion, see if the bulb gets hard. if not then, you either have a fuel line leak, sticking float needle, or bad fuel line bulb.

If the primer ball does not get hard, then replace it with a factory one, not a discount store cheapie. It should be mounted with the arrow facing up for the check valves to work correctly.

Squeeze until hard, make sure motor is level. Do not move throttle lever, key to ON, push in and hold for at least 3 seconds. Continue holding in while turning to START postition. Motor should fire up in less than 10 seconds.
