I started taking apart a Chevy 250 last week. I'll be taking it to a local machinist to be checked out and then machined if it's good. When this block was purchased the seller gave me a head for a Chevy 292. Can this be used on a 250 as an exact replacement? Are the valve sizes and combustion chamber the same? The machinist wasn't sure and warned me that if the geometry was different the engine may not last. The cylinder head was cast in Mexico and has no casting number on it. I'm assuming it's off a 292 because that's how the valve cover is marked. I'm not sure if i should get this head done or just find a reconditioned 250 automotive head.

I forgot to mention. The new engine will be replacing a Mercruiser 165.

Re: Chevy 250 inline 6

I think the head should be OK. It may have larger valves which would be a good thing. The main diff between a 292 and a 250 is the stroke. The 292 was made for dump trucks and school buses and has awesome torque and a way taller block.

an old school drag racer trick was to take 2 v-8 heads and saw one end off each and braze them together to make a 6 cyl head.

best way to determine is to go to the local auto parts and compare a 292 head gasket and a 250 head gasket.
