How do i get the bar that runs through the upper that the trim assembly swivels on? I have the upper off, and i have the water neck off. It looks like a bushing is driven in on the bottom side. Do I need to pull that and is there a snap-ring below that? Or do I just drive it out from the top down?

For some reason I found that pretty funny :D Because you're obviously right...

I need to put my hydraulic trim stuff from a 290 on a 280 where there is electric trim.

Still a bit fuzzy, but it sounds like your going to need to switch transum shields aren't you? Do you have a complete 290?

I have to assume  you mean you want to put the 290 trim cylinders on your 280 transom shield. If that's the case, you can't, the transome shields are completely different. You need a 290 transom shield.

The boat has a 290 on it, (it was totally assembled and everything, so everything's there) but the 290 upper and lower weren't in the greatest shape, so I picked up a 280 and just need to swap like the steering and trim stuff that mountes to the actual drive itself, from my original 290 upper and lower to the 280 upper and lower to put back on my 290 transom plate with trim rods.

I hope I explained that better. Sorry, and thanks again.

I'm pretty sure you need to reshim before you install. You can't just bolt the replacements on or your drive will not last.

so does that shaft just drive out of there then? No snap ring on the bottom?

Search the threads for a link from Don s with the manual for your outdrive, 280 thru DP-C.

BTW the pivot tub is pressed into place., as are the bushings. You must have the lower off to remove. I've never done this so take it for what its worth. Volvo shows some special tools for removing it without damage. I'd secure that manual before starting if I were you. PM me with your email address if you can't locate the manual and I could try emailing it to you. Its in PDF form but 180 pages.

Thanks guys!!! Thats what I've been needing.

I understand manuals like this, read stuff like it almost every day. But the removal of this is a little fuzzy, it says
"2. Remove the hook up fork by driving out the steering spindle." So all you do is drive out that shaft?

It sure looks that way. But be careful not to damage the tube.

I'd love to see some photos of your progress if your so inclined.:)

I may be doing the same thing this winter.

If you have a true 290, all you have to do is replace the upper and lower units from the 280 onto the 290. They will have to be reshimmed, and you will need the bearing race for the lower out of the 280 intermediate housing.
But I think what you are about to try isn't going to work. The intermediate housing where the fork mounts is different.

hmm, I have a true 290. What do you mean by upper and lower? I'm assuming I'm thinking of things wrong. Doesn't the steering/trim stuff mount to the upper? Or, are you just meaning put the lower unit from the 280 on my 290? Then have it re-shimmed?

If so, Does the manual discuss how to shim?

yeah, i realized this after I wrote that. I don't know what to do now captmello, it seems switching the upper and lower onto my 290 intermediate isn't a bad idea.... I guess I didn't realize it was going to be this big of a deal.

Thanks for helping me through this guys. I'm like, very on edge right now tryign to get this thing going

I hear ya. Working on these outdrives is a whole different animal Like Don said swapping the upper and lowers is doable but there are the little gotchas he talks about plus trying to become an outdrive mechanic at the same time.

I wouldn't even think of doing the swap myself and try to learn to shim the bearings without the special tools that make the job go smooth. You just ruin your drive after hours of work.

Maybe you should get on the phone and see if you can find a mechanic that will install those two parts for you. Get it done right. Don't hand it over to some 24 year old who'll "give it a shot" Find an old timer type.:)

Why are you trying to remove the pivot tube anyway?

Well, I got the boat knowing it'd need work, the outdrive turns great, but the case is pretty shot. So I was doing some research on the forum here, and some of you mentioned that the 280 and 290 are virtually the same except for the transom plate, ergo, the trim systems. So I could swap my 290 drive, at least, with a 280 and keep my 290 plate. So thats what I'm trying to do, and just figuring out what to do with the trim is now hanging me up.
