i have a 5hp gamefisher motor. one day i was out trolling and the motor shut off. i tried to start it and could not. i got a tow in and when i got back to the dock it started. the next day i took a look at it and found nothing wrong. i changed the spark plug with a brand new plug, took the carb apart and it was spotless, checked float bowl height and all was good. put back together and ran it in a garbage can full of water and it ran fine. idled fine and ran all speeds no problem. i took it out and he water to go fishing and when i got about 40 yards from the dock i was on a plain it started to die and was at idle at full throttle then died. i pushed the primer bulb one time and it started and i went back to the dock. it did not run good all the way to the dock. at the dock i tied it up and started it and it ran fine. i put it in gear and gave it full throttle and it seemed ok. i took it out again and it did the same thing. sometimes it runs for 40 yards and others it will go 100 yards. i played with it at the dock while tied up and i could make it do it there. everytime i had to push the primer bulb to get it to start. so i figured it is a fuel issue. i replaced the fuel pump diaphram and filter and gaskets. i cleaned the carb again, replaced the fuel line and primer bulb. i checked all fuel lines and all are clear. i put it back in the garbage can and it ran fine, but did do it one time in the can. i ran it in the can for at least an hour. it ran in the can last time as well, but did not run at the lake. it is a 10 foot boat, very light. i am going to go and try again at the lake, but i suspect it will do the same thing.. anyone have anyu ideas???? so to recap.. new spark plug, new fuel pump, clean carb, new fuel line, new primer bulb, new fuel filter, clean fuel lines.

Have you had the motor long? has it allways run well.
Unfortunately we need a model number it identify who built the motor.
But I will assume it is an Eska built motor.
Did the fuel element appear bad?Element needs to be installed at a 45 degree angle approximately 10 oclock and 8 oclock.were you able to keep it from stalling by squeezing the primer bulb?Is the vent on the tank open and clear? there probably is a strainer in the tank that should be checked.
Does it seem especially hot?Does water mist out of the relief holes in the leg.
You might check for spark when it stalls.Sometime the coil will fail when it heats up.

i think the motor is an 85. the fuel pump i got was mercury parts. there is no strainer in the tank, just a pickup line. i did check the fuel tank vent and i even tried leaving the gas cap loose. the primer bulb is always hard and it is new. the primer bulb i am pushing to start it is on the side of the motor. it squirts fuel into the carb. spark i have not checked, but as soon as i push primer on side of engine it starts. it does it right away so the motor is barley at operating temp.

No model number? Is it a 1 cylinder fully water cooled? Not an aircooled power head. The fuel pump a squarish device on the carb?It appears it may be a Merc. Be sure the fuel quick connector is not sucking air.It can leak air and not leak gas.Are valves in the pump in good shape? Is it possible to tell if the diaphram is getting a good pulse?Did you check the float level?1/2" measured from the body.Did you check the fuel line fittings for cracks? loose?

yes it is a one cylnder water cooled. the fuel pump is not on the carb. it is back on the crankcase near the cylnder. i replaced the diapram. i did check float level and it is fine. i did not check the quick connect. the valves or reeds in the pump are fine. the quick connect does have a dryed up oring??so it can suck air and loose fuel to the carb.hmmmmm would the primer bulb still be hard if that was happening??
