SO I bought the boat knowing it was a project. I got a kicker and electronics worth more then the what I paid. So here is the question.
#1 cylinder on the 125b is 0 compression (warm or cold) I would guess a stuck valve. #4 has 100psi #2,3 165-170. SO the motor is garbage.

Moving on. from what i understand parts for the 131 are expensive. so here is my plan tell me if it will work.

I get a 290 drive including transom housing will this fit in the cut out for the 270? If i Just wanted to put the 290 drive on the 270 transome would it fit does it use the same transom unit?

The 290 drive comes with a bellhousing and everything for the v8 305 or 350. So I buy a SBC put the bellhousing on it and the 290 drive.

Issue I can forsee maybe you can help:
The boat does not have power steering It has a tiller arm like you see with out boards. does this make the conversion not possible?
That tiller arm may rub v8?

If this isn't going to work what other engines are available that will work with the 125b setup? 121? 131 135 145? Any striaght sixes?

The engine room compartment would hold a 454... Also, the stringers are in place for a v8 already.

Nope, you would need a bigger hole for the 290. The paper cutout template is available from Volvo. I have it in .pdf format somewhere, but it won't help much when locating the cutout on the transom. But it does give you an idea of what the cutout looks like.

Nope, not even close.

The 290 drive comes with a bellhousing and everything for the v8 305 or 350. So I buy a SBC put the bellhousing on it and the 290 drive.

Only if you have the same engine model year engine. Do you have the exhaust Y? How about exhaust manifolds and risers? Raw water pump, trim pump hoses, all the other stuff.

Re: aq125b repower

So no is the answer. to that one...
What about limitations as far as other engines with the same drive. like 125 a/b 131 141 145???

They should fit, but there are always a few "Gotchas" involved with those changes. And I really don't know what all they are.

That is a possiblility, but it ain't cheap, and without the special tools , you won't be able to get it right yourself, and it won't last.

Yes it will, But by the time you buy and replace the gears you may be able buy a complete outdrive.

Does your 270 have power trim? Or just the electric lift?

Re: aq125b repower

the 270 has power trim. Let say I want to rebuild the 125 where could i get a kit?
will a 280 drive fit the 270 transom?
I may just end up buying this engine putting it in an rebuilding the on in the boat now to have a spare.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...RTQ:MOTORS:1123&salenotsupported#ht_500wt_917

But the fact remains that the boat is underpowered. I have never cut a transom so if i can find a way to repower wtht eh transom i have now then it is a go

Re: aq125b repower

Either way the engine comes out today.
To remove it do i have remove the drive first? I have it all disconected and ready to lift.
Should seperate the drive and bellhousing?

Re: aq125b repower

Typically, you would remove the upper gear box, then remove the 6 bolts behind it, around the ring where the drive shaft come though the flywheel cover. Once those bolt are out, the engine will come out with the flywheel cover still bolted to the bell housing. However, you could unbolt it at the bell housing and slide the motor forward off the driveshaft and remove it that way. The first method is the "right way" especially when putting the motor back in.

Good Luck!!

Re: aq125b repower

I have found a local vp engine and will go that route and repower with more hp later (maybe over the winter). I will remove the upper gear box because I want to check the u joionts any ways. Any gotchas or tricks to make the removal easier?

Is there a need for the alignment bar ?
