Have any of you ever seen a prop radically damaged by picking up a ski rope?

I have a friend who damaged a 13 inch diameter repaired aluminum prop. The welded tips were broken off about an inch in on each blade and the blades were bent back about an inch or two at remainder of the tips.

I say he stuck it into the bottom (rocky sand bar) while approaching the dock. He says no--he did not feel anything and did not hit anything.

I say a ski-rope just could not cause that amount of damage. I have picked them up at full speed, cut them, and stalled the engine without bending the prop.

How about it guys? Am I right or wrong?

from those words it seems you just want to eather 1 be a know it all or 2 want to rub it in ... does it really matter how the guys prop is busted up ... he is going to need to replace it and is probbly feeling bad enough as is so why rub it in ?

Re: Ski-Rope prop damage.

Frank, it is "possible" that since the prop has been repaired before that a ski rope could damage it. It's much more likely that he touched the bottom. But since it was repaired before, he wouldn't have had to even known he hit bottom.

So you can't be 100% right on this one. Both things are "possible".

Re: Ski-Rope prop damage.

It was just banter between us. Of course, the damage is done, and we both agreed that with the extent of the damage, it would cost as much to repair as to buy a good used one. So, that prop is going on the scrap heap.

It is not a question about needing to be right. I have been wrong before--I got married, didn't I? LOL

He was adamant about not having felt anything like touching bottom, and I believe him. Just seemed odd to me that a ski rope would do that much damage.

Re: Ski-Rope prop damage.

i dident want to sound like a ticked off jerk its just sometimes sh*t happens ... once i went to raise the bow of a costomers boat to drain some rain water thats collected in it and not thinking the motor was down pushed the skeg into the asphalt infront of my shop i dident feel anny resistance it just happend ..basically like your friend its one of those sh*t happens things .... the onyl thing ( and bear with me we dont water ski here in hawaii so i know nothing about water sking) i can think of is if it was the rope its possible the welds on the repaired section wasent a through penetration and the welds were weak to begin with and the rope was just enough to bust some crappy welds ..
