1958 5.5 evinrude model 5516- hard to start
compression low 60 psi cold on both - i had 3 other motors like this low compression , never had this problem
Will start full choke 5-6 pulls with the throttle turn up a good bit more than halfway ----dose not like to run slow /shift or start area of the tiller handle.
Stop the motor AND CAN'T GET RESTARTED.Crab rebuilt -needle set 1.5 turns low 3/4 high -points condenser new, coils good have spark on both cylinders.

I PULLED THE POWER HAD OFF TODAY AND i found a missing seal #303391 and o ring missing THAT SIT under bottom of engine that ride on top of driveshaft ( there is spring , a cork gakest and sliver plate)
but missing the seal and o-ring.

what do think?

i think this is problem -anyone- other ideas everything else has been checked

What do I think? I think the compression is low. And I wonder if the coils are truly as good as you think they are...symptoms say they aren't. The missing seal will admit water to the crankcase, which will destroy the internals. That may be the underlying cause of all the present grief. If it goes on long enough, it will throw a rod. Then somebody will look at it and proclaim that it was run without enough oil. It wasn't the oil, it was the water.

If you have any serious plans to fix it up, you need to be realistic about the coils (ok, maybe they ARE good, I don't know), then open it up and see what it looks like inside.

I think coils also... if 1 has been replaced does that mean the other is original and just not cracked? I'd definitely replace it if so. I find when you put 2 new coils in an engine the new solid spark will fix a lot of weaknessess in other areas... like fuel... You still might have to look at the carb again but I'd start with coils...

btw, are you sure that's an Evinrude? did they want it to look like a Johnson and repaint the entire engine? Seems weird to me...

Personally I'd replace the original before I wasted another minute trying to fix her up. They all fail. Most visibly fail, some internally only... some only when they warm up... etc... Change the coil.

Rings are part number 378432. That is a set of 3 rings for one piston.
