I have to replace the starter and selenoid in a 88 wellcraft 19.2 classic that has a 3.7. in it. How do you tell if its CW or CCW engine< exspecially if you cant turn it over? I seem 2 remember some one telling me that there is something weird about these starters? Now Going against my better judgement im thinking of going down 2 advance auto and cing if they can match it up with something. 200+ 4 a new one, i might take my chances on a car one

First.... all Mercruiser engiens are left hand rotation.....

Second.... There was never a 3.7 in a car. Its a Merc engine.... not a GM or Ford engine. So you wouldn't find one.

Third.... Starters need to be marine rated.... if you somehow manage to find something that's not marine rated that fits.... you'll surely explode and die a painfull firely death.

Find a starter/alternator/electrical shop in your area and have yours rebuilt. If your core is usuable thats the least expensive option.

roadrash, I'll bet you a nickel that your starter is the least of your problems.

And while you won't "you'll surely explode and die a painfull firely death. " it is a possibility if you don't use a marine starter. Get yours rebuilt as suggested.

Then report back to us about what the next problem you encounter. (Antifreeze or water in the cylinders is what I'll bet!)

Im New to boating but if you question a hydrolocked engine, pull the plugs and turn it over. You can always bench test the starter before buying another one too

twincam, what I was referring to (and roadrash seems to have ruled out) is when people break the bendix on their starters, because the motor is hydrolocked. They think it's a starter issue, go buy a new one, or have that one rebuilt, only to have the same exact thing happen again. I always warn people with "starter problems" to make sure they don't have a "hydrolock problem" first.
