hello every one, i love the forums here very helpfull. i have a 56 fastwin that i just got done redoing it is a 15 hp ser# 15016-14092 it is running pretty good now but i still have a leaky high speed needle thats driving me nuts. i replaced the packing and cant get it to seal packing that came with the carb kit just dosent do the trick what else might i use. also that motor is 24:1 mix can i take that to 32:1 and still be good dose this motor have bearings in the power head or bushings that require a 24:1 mix i would like to try to cut back on the smoke a bit more but other then that it is ready to hit the water. i can't wait to see what she can do. any other info on this ser# will be great

thank you and god bless

Some folks use yellow, fuel-proof, teflon tape rolled into a strand/string as packing and get good results. I wouldn't go below 24:1 with that one. Using modern TCW-3 marine oil will help reduce the smoke.

The packing that came with the carb kit should work better than anything else. How many packing washers did you use? I give them a little shot of oil before I install them. The packing nut should be tightened just enough to keep friction on the needle. If the nut tops out before it compresses the packing enough to seal then it may still leak. In which case you need more packing.

Try a fourth washer and tighten the packing nut more. Synthetic outboard oil rated TC-W3 will greatly cut down on the smoke. As will a well adjusted carb.

I suspect your carburetor bowl is cracked or pitted in the packings area. A couple of packings should not leak. Is that a good guess?

Your first post seems to indicate that you are running it in a barrel. If that is true, get it out of that barrel and on a boat on the lake and you will find the smoke is way less objectionable. Especially after you get it adjusted properly and give it a few hard runs to burn the oil and sloppage out of the exhaust housing. You will never get rid of all the smoke though, because it is supposed to smoke.
